Ok,

Ping war time again. At the moment Im on Eircoms package of 3072/384, based in central Dublin. I think its 49euro a month (expensive) but my ping is good, no wait; my ping is GREAT. Observe.

admin@mixu ~
$ ping games1.iol.ie
PING games1.iol.ie (193.120.123.136): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 193.120.123.136: icmp_seq=0 ttl=57 time=11 ms
64 bytes from 193.120.123.136: icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=10 ms
64 bytes from 193.120.123.136: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=12 ms
64 bytes from 193.120.123.136: icmp_seq=3 ttl=57 time=12 ms

----games1.iol.ie PING Statistics----
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max/med = 10/11/12/12

Yes, 12ms stable in game. Who owns you now?

So lets break it down internationally:

Ireland :: 13ms
UK :: 25ms
Netherlands :: 25/38ms
Germany :: 38ms
Denmark :: 38ms/52ms
Sweden :: 52ms
Spain :: 52ms
Czech :: 52ms
Norway :: 52ms
Austria :: 52ms/65ms
USA :: 92ms

All above pings rock solid in quakeworld. I would also like to point out that Im using the PPPOATM option instead of the standard PPPOE with Eircom. There has been dispute that Eircom DOES NOT support ATM, it clearly does. Vinnit will also confess to his ms dropping 3-4ms by utilising this configuration.

Comparisons please,

Matt

Ya i used drawping in q3 and my ping was under 20ms for the first time. I probably wont use it for playing qw tho because it leaves my ping around 22 which is inbewteen 13 and 26ms which in qw messes the netcode up ever so slightly when your ping is not a division of the frame rate you have.

My connection will be 2mb instead of 1mb from tomorrow so ill see if that lowers the ping at all.

the ping is "good" but its no fucking great

Its been like this for a couple of months since eircom got rid of interleaving completely and added some more UL speed.

great ping <10ms to neighbouring countries.

Sucks that theyve done this now when most people arent even playing anymore. last time I played quake feels like a century ago.

Do NOT go with Magnet. 38ms to IE, 65 to UK, 110 to DK.

This is on 8mb "no contention ratio". Magnet may be good on a smaller connection as they might use less interleaving.

Personally, I wouldnt have anything to do with them. Check boards.ie regarding configuring their modems.

alright

eamo ya bleedin soap dodger, hahah im guessing youre basing what you said on stuff i told ya 5 years ago, because what youre saying reminds me of stuff ive said to you which was based on stuff al said to me in 2001 or so, except youre saying it wrong. the network ping is actually best for qw when its stable, and far away from boundary pings like 13, 26, etc. (which are multiples of the time per frame at 77fps).

Vinnit:
"..which is inbewteen 13 and 26ms which in qw messes the netcode up ever so slightly when your ping is not a division of the frame rate you have."
