| No matter what OS youre running, http://nquake.com is still the only link you need. The ezquake client is constantly updated and the nquake package textures and config defaults are maintained as sensible no matter what new features are added to the client, and the nquake front page even has a link to a web irc client that connects you to the #qwrookie channel on quakenet.
Also, that "modern guide" points you towards the utterly unusable, outdated altfire servers which give you the option of a thoroughly broken free-for-all server with bunny hopping severely crippled and huge map-cycle problems, and a similarly plagued capture-the-flag server on which you cant really change maps. QW has a rich competitive scene, and none of it revolves around ctf or ffa.
Servers have come a long way since 1996s qwsv.exe. I would direct anyone who wants to set up a server to http://qw-dev.net/projects/ktx
