| upon reading the interview of madman and dire hamster vs jim hughes, the future of gaming entered my mind. btw, jim hughes is a model/level creator for raven and currently working on quake 4. this interview jim hughes replys to a question about the difficulty of creating models in the next-generation games "it just gets exponentially worse with each generation of technology". so what i was thinking was, doom 3 and quake 4 (as q4 runs off id's new doom 3 engine) may not be able to run too well on my computer. these games may be 'next-generation' but if i am to keep up with my addiction of first-person-shooters ill need to upgrade which is hard with no money. but with these 'next-generation' games coming out how far can they take these models and pixel depths before it either becomes un-able or out-dated. will any large corporations ever consider trying to successfully get those old 80 virtual reality back into the limelight? they may need to make the 3d gear less bulky, unless they want that old 80 charm. but either way i would personally love to see quake make it into vr.
aside, i have found comparisons stated at either the id, activision or raven site that quake 4 is similar to quake 1 with its focus on single player, and quake 2 for playability. personally i found that quake 2 was good but the aiming system was somehow jerky and not as refined, even with mouse smoothing on, as quake 3. q2's aiming system is also in the ut and ut2k3 which has thus turned me against these games.
