punkbuster has been a load of hassle since it came out... the cpu lag and real lag when its updating, the intermittent lag during the game, bugs, kicks for stupid things like special characters in your name, or r_intensity 4 (never play on boomtown servers), client unknown to auth for ages, etc. i wouldn't mind suffering these inconveniences if pb did its job, but it only bans the poor-quality cheaters who probably wouldn't go unnoticed in a league match anyway.

i was just playing on burstfire instagib server, my 80 ping aim was better than usual, so it was a good enjoyable game of insta for once. i sympathised with the unnamedplayer who got kicked for having a banned name, no harm on aliasing on a public insta server since everyone else was aliased also (the mighty heelsnatcher was present). but the game went on, and i ground out a nice 60ish frag lead with 40% rail until a guy called '.' connected. 6 minutes into a 10min game, him on 90 ping i didn't think he could threaten my lead, but he was railing all over the place and steadily climbing up the scoreboad. after about 30 seconds, the first of the cheat accusations started. i did a /players and saw he had rate 7000 maxpackets 60, so i thought it was saik who had joined the server when he saw heelsnatcher playing, so i said that it probably wasn't a cheat (saik has been railing well lately). i have always been slow to shout aimbot, but it wasn't long before i agreed with the specs, this guy had managed to beat punkbuster. a few more mins confirmed it - there was no doubt about it, he was using an aimbot. i played the game out anyway, and started the next one, getting steadily pissed off (don't know why i didn't leave). until the muppet starts calling us n00bs in eurospeech. the players responded with the usual replies "whats the point in playing with a bot", "lets see how good you are without the cheat", etc.

i took a screenshot of his guid because he reminded me of a lame guy i know and i wanted to see if they matched. before i left, i mentioned this to him. he said he would just get another. so in a pathetic attempt to win the argument, i laughed at him for having to go to the hassle of getting a new cd key. but alas, he made it clear that i didn't understand. it makes a random guid everytime he connects to a server. so i said he'd never be able to use it in leagues.. and again, i was wrong :< pb doesn't detect it, and if it recompiles itself like he says, pb won't be able to detect it either. back at square 1 :(
