a few months back, a guy contacted me from new zealand asking me on advice about a lan they were gonna run. i did so and was delighted to see that his lan worked out great. here's a mail i got in return today.

hi eric,

some months ago i wrote to you asking your advice on holding a lan
gaming competition. here is a report on how it went.
i went around the local computer shops and one donated two games for
prizes and another lent us a 24 port switch and enough cat5 cables to
link up 24 computers. i borrowed enough tables and chairs for every one
and set the date for our labour weekend 20/21/22 october.
over these three days we accumulated over 46 hours of play time, file
sharing and trouble shooting. there were 12 computers entered by the
last day and twenty players. as the organizer i made sure that i had
every thing on hand that we could possibly need and as a result
everything ran as smooth as silk. your suggestions helped me here very
much.

we had competitions for quake iii, unreal tournament, need for speed and
red alert 2. the red alert 2 game was the standout competition as as it
was hard fought and a real spectator pleaser. the last round had three
competitors and the intense game play had everyone in the club watching
with great interest for the forty minutes it took to run the final.
we had a barbecue dinner after the last comp and prize giving. everyone
had a great time and all want to repeat the experience next year.
when i returned the switch and cables the retailer said "please, keep
the cables". about 150 metres of cable made into 24 lengths with plugs
included. i said "thank you very much" and brought the 8 port switch he
had on his shelf.
he gave me 25% off the price. wow.
now we have lans at my house all the time as i have strung cables
everywhere and purchased some cheap tables for all the machines to sit
on.

thank you for your help from afar. i followed your advise and made sure
everyone had fun, lots of fun.

thanks,
rick.

Since some many lans starting in Ireland compared to a few years ago ... should start an Irish LAN group for large ones over the country. help arrange hardware and stuff like that.

Yeah we were sort of thinking of that here in galway, a sort of Galway LAN Gaming community. We should really have one big national one and a big huge lan once or twice a year where we could move it to a different city every year. We would also need sponsorship and all that and we would have to make it a multi game lan not just quake or just cs. Differnet groups interested in certain games could start their own competitions at the lan and put all the competitions on a main compo list. It could be very successful and very organised.
