the thing i enjoy the most about lans is the challenge. i prepare by not playing for 6 months beforehand, then when i get to the lan i manage to beg someone's computer off them for long enough to play some competitive games on. i really love trying out all the different mice and special sloped keyboards, bonus if theres some kind of wierd acceleration on in the backround that i can't turn off.
i love that struggle to relearn the game whilst trying to get used to the computer whilst trying to catch up with the other player whos on his own perfect machine and has been playing every night for 6 months. i'm really glad that i have almost zero natural skill at the game, that it takes me about 4 days to get used to a different machine, and that not playing for a long time makes me really really shit. without these handicaps what would be the point? without lans the only way to test myself really is to go over to pete's gaff, fill the mouse full of black unremoveable stuff, break the backwards key, turn the speakers the wrong way round and try and smoke colm's joint while chatting to him...and play qw against vincent on dm4. unfairness is the apple of opportunity in the tree of despair.
