| cheers for the column eric, tis nice to have somewhere to rant the irish quake scene seems to be fairly dead at the moment, there are some people still playing q3, however this might increase slightly, because the new patch seems to reduce lag an awful lot. i will give it a try myself, i stopped playing q3 after acid played in their last league (many months ago, dunno when exactly). it deserves another go, the pro maps do not look too bad, and with less lag, it will make the game much less annoying. i got annoyed with the game in general, and went back to playing quakeworld, like many other people. i had never actually gotten any good at qw before switching to q3, even though i have been playing a few years, i'd say most of my improvement came at lans a while after q3 came out, i got isdn, and wasn't terribly impressed by it, since i spent most of my time trying different isps to get a decent ping to england. then i tried qw and isdn, and found its a rather sweet combination.
the qw scene picked up a while back, with a fair few oldskoolers making an appearance, and for a while there were wars a few nights a week. quakelords also went down a treat, unfortunately i was unable to play because i had to work, and the one time i did turn up, practically no-one else did. it seems to have quietened down now, hopefully that will change. regardless, i still play duels a fair bit, trying to gradually improve. i never get tired of playing dm4, even if i get beaten most of the time. a whole game can be made worthwhile, just by getting a string of nice kills at the end. i can't think of any computer game that comes anywhere near the satisfaction of smacking someone around in quakeworld.
anyway, thats probably enough for the minute. i might write some techy articles up here, if anyone wants. theres not as much call for them now though, since most people who play q3 have a decent machine, and you don't need much of a machine to play qw any suggestions for articles would be gratefully accepted. i can post basic recommmendations for people buying new machines for a start anyway.
ps just reading mikes column there, seems to be a bit of an fps drop in the latest point release, i'll have a bit of a look at that. it does actually seem to be slower on my machine also, but i am not using any fast graphics settings in my cfg, i'll have to try a tweaked cfg.
