| "yo, sound the bell, school's in sucka"
this is about making tiny little avi's of nice frags that you've done in quake3.
the programs you are going to need are quake3(...), adobe premiere, nandub, some "wav -> mp3 thing (lame)" and windows sound recorder.
the divx 5.02 codec will come in handy if you don't have it.
after getting all these you'll want to find the demo of your frag.
quake3 can spit out a sequence of screenshots using cl_avidemo during a demo.
bind one of the f1-f12 keys to "cl_avidemo 30" for recording and another "cl_avidemo 0" to stop.
run q3 at 640*480 or less with 16bit colour to make sure the tga files don't take up a ton of space e.g r_mode <= 3 , r_depthbits 16, r_colorbits 16, r_texturebits 16
when you hit "go" it spits out 30 tga files at the q3 resolution for every second of footage.
timescale .5 (50% demo speed) will make q3 spit out 60 frames a second, which is handy if you want to do slow mo.
on a shit pc (i.e dest's legendary p600) you can use timescale .2 and cl_avidemo 6 to get 30 fps
now loading up adobe premiere:
1: edit -> preferences -> general and still image -> still image: "default duration" set to 1 instead of 150.
then go to:
2: file -> import -> file, point it to your screenshot dump (eg c:\q3\osp\screenshots) and click on the first screenshot in the sequence.
3: tick the "numbered stills" box beneath. click ok. this should import the animation of your frag.
4: drag the icon for this animation into the timeline thing for video at the bottom.
you can press play now to see the screenshots come together.
to output this file as a divx:
5: file -> export timeline -> movie..
then to set it to use divx to compress:
6: click the drop down box, go to "video" and select divx from the list of compressors. set divx to whatever res u grabbed it at
you might want to brighten up the video so:
7: click the drop down box, go to "special processing", modify, and then lower the gamma.
8: click save, et voila after some processing you should have a little avi done. much smaller than all the tga files.
these silent frags look nice, but they lack atmosphere.
you can capture the quake3 sound using windowed q3 and sound recorder and save it as cd quality ".wav". (start -> accessories -> entertainment)
figure out yourself how to record it at the right speed. premiere is good at mucking the sound around for slow-mo.
it's finnicky but the best way i found to sync sound to video was to import the audio file into premiere,
sync it with the images by cutting lumps off the start of the audio and then exporting the audio alone.
this audio file is huge. compress it by turning it into .mp3.
now load up nandub:
1: go to video -> direct stream copy and check it.
2: file -> import video file, and point it to your .avi from premiere.
3: audio -> (vbr) mp3 audio... , and point it to your .mp3 of the q3 sound/or a music mp3.
4: hit f7 and save. nandub should splice the compressed movie and sound together.
that's it!
you can add music by using windows sound recorder to mix two uncompressed wav files together.
record your music, mix it with the sound effects .wav from q3. save this and compress it to .mp3.
stick that into nandub instead of the plain sfx file, so now you have music and sound and images.
f7 save, now you (hopefully) have compressed video, sound and music.
