i'm thinking of getting a new gfx card, because my voodoo3 is very bad in q3, every couple of games the cpu loads for 2 or 3 minutes. I blame my v3 for this, because dest and lorc also have voodoos (lorc on v2 and dest on v3) and they both have the same problem.

The thing is... i only have a p3 450, so would there be any point on getting a good gfx card like this? what kind of fps would i be likely to get in q3?

Friend of mine from Norway, had e_actly the same situation. He got himself a gf2 32meg.. and had a sustained increase of 10fps on a k62-450. The new Ti would prolly be a lot better. Those cards do a lot of the grahics work onboard, take a bit of strain off the processor. Unlike the voodoo's... btw.. anyone want my v5?

Killy, putting a gfx card more that is more powerful than a V3 will make a huge difference. Less fps drops, higher sustained fps, etc. A better gfx card means that jumps/shots are easier too.
On top of which, I got / get 145 fps from a similar spec machine with a usable cfg and a mere gf2mx. So a gf2 ultra/ti would kick quake 3 a new arsehole
No worries about whether it would be of use, it will definately speed things up considerably.

the white stripe running across the top of Saik's case. Like the little scober cars with the stripe across the side. i.e. "Go-Faster Stripe"

killy if you get the gf2ti it will be better but not by much with a 450, my advice would be to find a 100mhz fsb PIII in either slot form or a socket with an adapter and get the gf2ti if you can.

850 is about as fast as you can get 100 fsb ones, but there are the odd 100fsb gig chips going around

if a gf2 ti does not put killy's fps up past the 130 mark i will buy it off him at ful cost.
when my p500 went from tnt2u to gf2mx it went up from 100 fps to 145...
i seriously dont think you need to upgrade the cpu etc.
esp with the sweet laptop you have.

Yeah, that laptop is pretty sweet alright. Theres not a whole lot of point going with a new cpu, a 1 gig PIII 100fsb would cost too much, and would not be twice as fast for quake, since the bus speed stays the same. There isn't much point in getting a top of the line graphics card for it, a geforce2 mx should be able to keep up with the 450 ok.
