| i think everyone will agree that we all had a deadly weekend at the ul lan, aka "afghanalan", run by lordkhan from ul's fragnet games society. sonic had to go home early in the week and was sorely missed, not only a prominent lan organiser but also as the nd human punchbag. we had a few hitches as regards tables and the network on friday, people's machines not working etc., but got stuck in from about 5pm and with help from devore, amp, bunny and overlord we got it sorted by friday night closing, which was reasonably on schedule. we all went downstairs to the scholars bar function room, which is just a room off the pub where they have bands/djs from time to time. khan warned us that the ul sci-fi society, "ten forward" (??!!!??), had the room booked, but after going all night, there was no way we were standing out in a corner of the main bar, so we pulled a few tables together in the function room and buried a few pints. some people ignorant in the ways of the nerd might point out that it was nice and fitting that all the losers were in one room in the pub, "leaving more rampant totty for all the real men" to quote blackadder. however, the distinction must be made. when it comes to nerds, quakers spit on trekkies, they are the lowest of the low, a cancerous pollop on the anus of humanity. they looked like a mixture of early-90's metallers crossed with the comic shop owner from the simpsons. one of them actually attempted to give us a stare for stepping into their private room, then went red and turned back to his group of huddling chimps as they bobbed their heads up and down to some long-dead early-90s dance tune. it's been a long time since there was a proper quake meet, and it was deadly to have some lads turn up that we hadn't met in person, such as the fishhead lads (killy, vincent, saik), town, meat, and of course the old reliables like el_pres, havok, gerry, sutty to name a few. town was the funniest, we were expecting some young fella to arrive with his daddy, and this 29yr old skinhead walked in the door, i thought he was in the wrong place. sound bastard, and an excellent aim on him too. himself and gman ran their own little private bet which afaik ended up with town being 2 pints richer.
saturday saw 40 pcs at the lan going strong, which is almost as many as i have seen before at any irish lan. there were a number of those were cs players, and another bunch were playing anything at all once it had network code in it, and the rest were qw/q3ers, we had around 20 in all. saturday afternoon we ran a pickup mini league, with 5 teams made up of seeded players.
the teams were (captains first):
group a:
beast gman vincent kormat
koopa podgeen town meat
group b:
bunny zero havok wario
el_pres gerry saik amp
overlord killy devore damo
we split them into two groups, with the agreed stronger teams playing it off first, beast vs koopa. a very close game on dm6, with beast's team coming out on top by 144-140 in the end. the lower three teams played round robin which resulted in bunny's team coming top with 2 wins, overlords with 1, and el_pres' team with 0. they were good games, but they were early in the w/e and a lot of players improved no-end by sunday evening. the final was played over two maps between bunny's and beast's teams. beast's team took both dm7 and dm6 to win the league with exceptional play from beast vin and gman, vin more than anyone, he is a qw player who only recently changed over, and played unbelievably all weekend. we found out we had to leave earlier than expected that evening, by 9.30, but went downstairs again for a feed of pints, and a load of the lads kipped in our house that night.
of all the weekend, i think sunday was the best crack. we opened with nd-vs-fh, and had some absolutely cracking wars, some of them horribly close, i have demos and screenshots back home, i'll upload them later on. fh were very surprising on the lan, a hell of a lot better than on the net, killy and vin especially, amazing rail shots on them. we changed over after the fh lads left, and played some 8-vs-8 wolfenstein which was a good laugh, that kind of a game you would play at a lan for fun but i wouldn't bother playin it seriously online. we finished up then with a ton of pickup wars right up until we left the place shattered tired. was a great weekend, thanks to lk for organising it, everyone who helped out, and of course everyone who made the journey to turn up and make the weekend the good fun it was. hopefully another one soon.
highlight of the weekend : saturday morning, devore walks into the lan, goes over to his machine and sits down. moments later, he mumbles "where's my network card", then after closer inspection, "someone is after stealing my fucking network card!!!"......silence comes over the lan, for about 5 seconds, everyone looking around at each other, then the guy sitting next to devore meekly points out that his network card is still in his machine.....
