| i`ve been messing with linux on and off for the last 6 months.
my main aim was to get quake3 working in it as that was the only thing keeping me in windows.
so here it is the big filthy write up, a bit of a guide really.
first things first, my pc spec
shuttle sn45g / nforce2 ultra 400
amd athlon 2500+(barton)
256 twinmos pc2700 ram
80gb western digital hdd
radeon 9600 gfx
im using mandrake 9.2 linux from here
steps:
1) download the cd images, burn them to a cd(using nero > burn image)
2) boot from cd1, install linux - its easy
3) get the kernel source here, install it by clicking it
4) download nforce drivers here, uncompress them
5) open a terminal, change to super user mode(su),change directory(cd) to where u uncompressed the nforce drivers, type "make", then "make install", reboot
6) your onboard lan, audio and agp should now be functioning
7) download radeon drivers here, also the readme here, and install them
8) get out of the x server(ctrl+alt+f1), wait for it to shut down, change to super user(su), and run the ati config thing "fglrxconfig", answer all the questions, and make sure to "y" to agp gart module. reboot
9) the gfx should now be working, you can test it by running "fgl_glxgears" in the terminal, the fps rating should be over 200
10) quake time, download the point release here, run it, installs to "/usr/local/games/quake3"
11) we need to copy the pak0.pk3 to the linux install, a couple of ways of doing this, my way(wrong way prolly) was to open the terminal, super user(su)and "chmod" the quake3 folder so i(user) had full permission on it and copy over all my quake 3 mods from windows install
then copy the pak0.pk3 file into "/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3" i could have also done it typing a command like "cp /mnt/windows/games/q3/baseq3/pak0.pk3 /usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/" but im a fag, and like going in thru the gui to my quake3 folder.
12) nearly there, copy over your config and other stuff you need, make sure you have your q3key in your baseq3 folder only.
linux will create a folder called ".q3a" in your home directory as well, which holds configs and pb stuff, weird eh
13) pb download pbweb here, place it in your ".q3a" folder. open a termainlyou always should have at least one open
and "cd" to where you put pbweb and run it "./pbweb.x86", if that dont work try it from the "/usr/local/games...." folder
14) nearly there, you`ll want a games browser of course(like allseeingeye) get eqf here, you`ll need this as well qstat
you run it from the terminal > "xqf" set up some server filters(osp mod, less than 100 ping etc.), you can also setup the config exec and stuff from the menus
15) thats about it really, a couple of other apps you might want are x-chat(irc) and well, the list is endless
the handy thing with using mandrake 9.2 is that you dont have to go looking for software, there`s an inbuilt software finder called urpmi(similar to apt get in debian)
well was it worth, yeah i think so, a lot of my college/work stuff is based around linix(i can hear you laughing ronin)so im glad to be getting the hang of it
heres a pic baz in linux
heres another one
