recently my trusty old ms
intelli mouse w/intelli eye has been acting up. a few people have suggested
the wires in it are a little dodgy as it has a tendancy to "die" during a game
of quake 3 or just randomly stop in windows. since usb is hot swap, it's like
the mouse is being plugged in and plugged out.

so i've decided to look
into getting a new mouse. when i started playing games in about 1995 i started
out with a classic microsoft serial mouse, then moved onto the ps2 version,
and again onto the ps2 version with the mouse wheel. when the optical version
of this mouse came out, i bought it to try it out ... and found it perfect.
it's exactly the same shape as the classic version so i've never used a mouse
that isn't this particular shape. unfortunately microsoft have now discontinued
the friggin product and decided to bring out a line of flashy, silvery glowy
turd head line of mice.

i've been with optical now
for about um, just over 1 year now and since i use a fairly high sensitivity
in quake 3 (because i use a low fov) the mouse has always served me well. however
in recent times massive improvements have been made in optical mice.

here are the two i've been
considering buying :

logitech dual optical

speed : 2x2000 images / sec

resolution : 800 cpi

usb ps/2 mouse

microsoft intelli mouse
explorer 3.0

speed : 6000 images/sec

resolution : 400 cpi

usb ps/2 mouse

i'm also thinking about
going back to a ball mouse. the last time i was in the playing fields in london
i played the evening with a black usb intellimouse w/ball and found it quite
decent and accurate. so if anyone out there has a recommendation for a top ball
mouse or knows which of the above two mice would be the best purchase then please
fire in a comment there and help this muppet

myself and drex have both got logitech dual opticals, and are both impressed with them I think. I certainly am. I heard tails of opticals going nuts if you "twitch" it for flick-rails etc. but the dual optical never has yet. The buttons are closer together than the mouseman I was used to before, but once you're used to it its lovely. Nice weight, smooth movement, good precision, no batteries, no ball to get gunked up long as you don't have a particularly geometric mousemat pattern it should be sorted.

DEATH, nijA, storm and CaNeD of ra3 clan defiance all use the explorer 3.0. [D] is rated by many as 2nd best RA3 clan in the UK - and as we all know RA3 is very demanding on weapon skills. This to me shows that the explorer is very accurate, and i've not heard any bad things about it. I personally don't have one, but it's my next buy. Pretty expensive for £45 though

As for the dual optical, not a clue - but sounds good given Crusaders comment.

I had an MS Intellimouse Optical and about a month ago it just stopped working. I have no idea why. I've tried loads of things but nothing will get it to work.

None of the top DM'ers use explorers afaik. Generally regarded as too big and clunky I think. blokey uses a wingman gaming one atm, ranger's on a usb intelli, most of the rest of 4k use the "official 4k mouse" (logitech pilot with ball).

The explorer just feels too big for flick shots - not such an issue in ra3, but a big deal in DM.

I've gone back to my trusty logitech pilot with ball, after my razer started acting up. Its holding up very well, the only reason I went away from the pilot in the first place was that the razer was smoother, but the razer quickly deteriorated, and would stick, especially on flicks.
Apparently you can improve the pilot by fitting a different mouse ball, but anyone got any ideas on which one to use?

When I can afford to I'll probably get a logitech optical.

Just to confirm what you said about the mice in the playing fields mike, I played with the same type of mouse when I was there, and found it excellent. I thought it was better than the standard intellimouse, perhaps it was just my imagination?

Im well know for my rants about opticals and the wonderful feel of ball under my hand
But i gave the dual optical a try works bloody great, i dont play vq3 no more but i have had a quite a few cpm games with it which tends to suit my aim, very flicky and not once did it freak out due to flick shots like the older opticals did

The dual optical is pretty big and Damned heavy but i was a fan of the old mouseman ball which they dont make no more =(( its what i played my first 1yr or so of q3 on and i flick shot, just a shame that this new one isnt quite the same shape as the old mouseman. i've had a wingman, weird sliping of the ball when u flicked i put my mouseman ball in helped abit, nice mouse very smooth but too many flaws o mouse b1 broke from a little tap on the desk during a frusatrating game and a pilot, same ball as the wingman had big but light didnt slip like the wingman but i dont like it so my trusty mouseman ball went in, this mouse was too low and to light for me good for cs thou =p

There are quite a few of us looking for mice atm. Like Drex, I use the Mouseman Wheelmouse with the ball, its getting a little old now and the bastards dont make it anymore. Myself and Koopa were thinking of getting optical, but I must tell you (and he'll give his usual big cluck explanation later on im sure) that the explorer 3.0 with the 6000 reads/sec is sposed to be a lot better than the dual optical logitech, but tbh i wouldnt know. I had a look at one recently and liked it a lot. some people dont like the big mice, but when i first used the logi mouseman i thought the thing was way too fuckin big, and now anything smaller is pants. I think me n sam are gonna by the intelli explorer 3.0, theres some deal on a site for a 5-pack for 150 notes.

I think i'm gonna get both of those new mice and see which is better and send the fuct one back. I'll go in on that 5 pack if u need another bitta monaay

From what I hear the ms one that reads 6000/times a second only has one sensor on the bottom of it, i dunno what this is but the dual optical one has 2 sensors on the bottom and double the resolution, heh we need sam to go through some mad explanation of the whole thing.

Been waiting to buy a Optical 3.0 fer ages now apparently they are the dogs bollicks

Two guys in PR use them. One of the lucky buggers won his at I9! I currently use the 1500 version which can fuk up on flick shots the odd time. The new version though is 4 times as fast and was designed to do away with this problem (well maybe not for flick shots in Q3 but ya know what i mean! ) read MS site for more info.

Anyhows and chance of posting the like where you seen them for sale so I can place meh order?

yeah ronan we are, based mainly on collie's recommendation of it, im willing to risk 50 quid on it

basically theres a load of us here who use the exact same setup, logitech mouseman wheel on a logitech wingman mousepad, and low sensitivity in quake.. collie used the exact same setup, and hes moved to explorer 3.0 on a wingman mousepad, says its class, hes on a higher sensitivity though so he probably wouldnt have as many problems with opticals as us (lifting them off the desk while playing is meant to switch off the LED or something apparently, etc)

hum i tend to lift the mouse off the my pad alot cos of low sens, but the mosue isn't moving then so it should be the same as the LED turning off, for me anyway my mouse ball tends to stop ded right away after lifting it. i'll go in on this 5pack deal if u still need another person, my 4yr intelli wont cut it much longer :(
