has to get a mention on this site, aaa finally receive their just awards, and confirm what

i have believed since they first played ctf as a team, that they're the best ctf team

around. after three in a row in the ctf nations cup, france had proven themselves to be

europe's strongest in the national scene, but despite a few failed attempts they always

just missed out on the clan honours. the man behind the victory is undoubtably thefou,

possibly the best ctfer of all time, who played some great games at quakecon. good

showings by his teammates st_germain on flag def, raoul, and penx.

the final was played against the americans and reigning champions, cloud9. a very well

organised c9 defence (viju and pals) kept aaa at bay on one of their better maps, cp9, but

it wasn't good enough as the frenchies slayed the ghosts of 2003 and took out the

americans on their own turf of cp15. i said before the tournament that i was worried that

aaa's too-aggressive tactics might backfire on lan, but i was wrong about that, and they

were very impressive in the execution of their ambitious strategy. great powerup syncing

gave them the deserved points on cp15, before a very short 3rd map which i missed mar bhí

orm dul go dtí an leithris (a quick "overtime" cap won it for aaa in a couple of minutes).

the gunzoids looked savage before the tournament, blokey's aim working nicely, defmasta

appleseed as rock-solid as ever. i think this was the first time i had seen deus ctfing

on lan, and he didn't disappoint either. the only downside to the gzd team was, as i had

anticipated, that derfel's lack of fragging power and survival made it difficult when the

enemy was hitting 50% lg. nonetheless, gzd had a good tournament, destroying *69's feeble

hopes just like last season with a thorough hammering, and even disposing of the highly

rated tempest comfortably. their best game saw them send cloud9 into the lower bracket,

breaking the americans altogether in the second map. i think that tiredness set in, this

is what it looked like to me as they reached the winner bracket final and performed well

below the standard they had set for themselves. a moderately heavy loss against aaa

damaged their form even further, and set them up for the lowlight of their tournament vs

cloud9 on ctf2, where they never really contended in a map where they should have been

favourites.

ice climbers deserve congratulations for their campaign, which saw them finish 5th after a

3 map, overtime loss to last season's 2nd place 519. not bad for a clan which has only

been playing ctf for a couple of weeks. their greatest scalp has to be that of the

internet gamers 32nd, who had been sent to the lower bracket in a very close game against

cloud9.

a great tournament nonetheless, and well done to the teams involved. all the results and final standings are on the

killy, if you look at my small post in the discussions. I think 519 made a huge mistake in being a little too defensive. They were basically playing for a 1-0 nearly every game they played, ie bringing regen back to defend with and sometimes even quad, they didnt take any risks and it cost them. They have what are probably some of the most damaging players around....

aAa deserved it, easy to notice that themselves and gzd were the only true ctf clans there. derfel was defo the weak link with gzd - too low a sens from what i saw, simple as.

I wouldn't say that aAa and GZD were the only true ctf clans there, the likes of -ve and c9 are ctf only clans, while aAa for example also play TDM, and would probably have come 3rd behind ic and 519 if the competition had been 4v4 tdm, but true they played like a pure ctf side. The true CTF clans would have been cloud9, 32nd and -ve I think, as well as some of the suckier ones, but in terms of play, aAa had the most CTF flair usually. Most of the clans were more defensive alright, but I do not agree that defensive CTF == tdm.

but very few clans have the ability to get away with 3 attack on LAN in 4v4, you have to be very organised.. you could tell on cp15 for example, St_Germain often left the base empty and defended high/mid by home regen, presumably because his teammates said they would let him know if anyone attacked low. That is really handy for the team and gives a huge boost at mid, but you'd really need to trust the other players in the team to let you know if theres danger.

even then its risky because someone could get a very forward spawn.. I dont know the spawns on cp15, so maybe they had the def covered and I'm overrating St_G and aAa teamplay, would have to check it out again in demo.

after qlan2, aAa praccy'd like mad on cp15, in fact nearly every pickup for the next month was cp15, Knowing it as our home map, in 4v4 there is no flag def. Spawns on cp15 tend to be in the base, where u can grab SG low, or RL on flag, Plasma low lift as well, the luck spawn is high regen, if u can make mid and grab shaft

You need to rush mid high to protect the PU's, the timing on those PU's was class, some lovely delayed PU's.

519 always take PU home, and only attack with full set of everything(regen/quad/RA/MH etc) it helps having z4 as ur def

GZD played well, and if anything there downfall was the lack in positioning of DEUS, derfel(defril!!) is one of the best attackers out there, but needs a 15k damage team mate to clear base.

aAa capped under 45secs on 3rd map(FL = 1) on cp1, the best way to cap, before the PU's

Overall a good tournie in CTF terms, and a proper ctf team winning with sexy play.

I only saw the latter stages of the 1v1, but boy did cooler get raped on hub3, id imagine czm is an old skool qw player, he played very qw like on that map. Z4 got schooled on T4, and some gayness meant one of the swedes dropped.

check some demos! I topshotted alot and often did more dmg than deus, just because one frags selectively doesn't mean one can't frag , btw we were all knackered for our last 2 matches and they made us change pc's, comms stopped working and we just didn't find our groove again :( rule changes sucked too (drawing maps meaning u could win first then play for 0-0 secpnd which forced us to go all att at the end of both matches we lost).
we had a great time away from the compos tho and had a week in NY after, plus 3rd place paid for the trip, which was nice.
stoned atm sorry if i make no sense
