| I absolutely love Doom 3. The single player was awsome with cinematic-like quality effects (Hell is just mad) and the multiplayer is the best game I've played so far but maybe not on a pure gameplay level (go and play SplinterCell 2 multiplayer to see something fresh and very interesting on a multiplayer basis).
I must say that I understand that ppl keep on criticising D3 on a gameplay level, which is a valid point as it feels soo much 'behind' the most recent games out there but the new engine clearly brings you to a new level of gaming. The unified lightning and shadows, the per-pixel hit detection and getting rid of the 'use' button gives us an excellent new step up to gaming in general. Vehicules, original games types, massive outdoors, new weapons, blah is just something you add on top of the new engine. It'll happen very soon with Quake 4 being the Doom 3 + Quake 3 + Tribes all together.
It takes a bit of imagination to understand that this game/engine is truely groundbreaking. It will become much more obvious when you'll be able to get a 125 fps in Quake 4 which I believe should be the case for around december 2006 if you will be able to afford the most recent gear by the time.
Nobody plays it? Just remember back in 1999 when Quake 3 was released ... It was exactly the same. Maps are no good? Who plays the original Q3 maps these days? It'll be the same for the D3 maps. New maps like Phrantic 2 or Never outgunned (both from the Sweltpack) gives you already a very good overview of what the future 1v1 will be.
Although D3 is more a showcase of the new engine than anything else, it's a major step ahead in the gaming industry ...
