That's very true Yet the game is beautiful and the sound engine is great (which is a big part in the scary effect). And it's still scary even when you re-play the game, knowing what will happen and when as you just said.
I understand your point but I wouldn't knock the game down just yet. After all, Carmack hasn't spent much time on the multiplayer aspect of the game yet (the netcode isn't very good yet but I believe it's part of the per-pixel hit detection which can make things quite heavy to manage online). The development of D3 has been mostly focused on the singleplayer game so far because the after-q3 engine had to be build using a brand new renderer and the result is stunning, far ahead of anything on the market today and it will still be the same for a while (unreal 3 is the only other thing that looks like it has something strong to compete against). Also, they haven't developped anything on the AI front either and using the first Doom as basis for the scenario is probably the best they could do to avoid AI development (you don't need AI for zombies) and thus save some overall development time.
I still believe that the game has a strong potential to become a very good multiplayer experience and I think it could still be a successful online game.
Why play HL2dm? Because of the gravity gun??? Hahahah, from now on, each and every fps with good physics will include one. Anyway, as soon as you pick something up, you can't see anything anymore. Appart from that, the so-called 'source' engine is nothing new visually. It's like HL1 with higher resulution textures. The good things in HL2 are the 'realistic' face animations which are no use in multiplayer until voice recognition is much more elaborated (and then link your character facial animation with what you say through your microphone).
Idsoftware hasn't fold any of their cards on the multiplayer aspect of doom 3 yet, let them do so and then we'll see ...
