well, as an eircom broad band customer for the past 18 months i must say i'm satisfied with my connection to the bastards. even tho i'm satisfied, there is plenty of room for improvement.

ok, point of this post is to show how eircom's home starter pack has improved in different ways.

hardware

modem: zoom adsl usb modem 5510 (cheap yolk, 60 euros in pc world now)

os: windows me ( ))))))))) )

misc settings: none (no change mtu.. etc)

2003

ireland - 25ms rock solid

uk - 38ms solid

netherlands - 38ms-48ms

germany - 52ms rock solid

sweden - 65ms rock solid

denmark - 78ms rock solid

finland - 78ms rock solid

poland - 130ms unstable

usa - 120ms solid

2005

ireland - 25ms

uk - 28-39ms *

nl - 45ms *

de - 52ms

denmark - 52ms *

sweden - 65ms

finland - 78ms

poland - 64ms *

usa - 84ms *

......

while ireland, germany, sweden and finland remain the same ping wise it's nice to see better routing in the other countries.

uk

i can get 28ms to the trickery servers if i cap my fps at 72 (it can sometime vary from 28-31ms, but still..) but most of the time its a steady 39ms.

denmark

is another big improvement, i remember these servers being an utter pain to play on due to their akward ping replies but today they are fine to play on.

netherlands

are very unreliable. one minute its 39ms, next its 65ms. damn stoners

poland

has also improved greatly, some servers i can even get 52 ms to.

usa

i don't really play much here, but it's also nice to see such an improvement there. a big drop from 120 to 84ms.

at night time, i've even seen ase report pings 9ms/10ms in its browser to games5.iol.ie, but dos pings report 13ms constantly.

------

downloads

------

not much has changed here, always had a good download rate to good servers, highest i've seen being 62kbps (downloading cygwin)

------

eircom vs ntl

------

i asked techno to ping two servers for me, one irish the other english.

games5.iol.ie

ping statistics for 193.120.123.137:

packets: sent = 4, received = 4, lost = 0 (0% loss),

approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

minimum = 40ms, maximum = 50ms, average = 45ms

quake.dm4.co.uk

ping statistics for 217.158.68.196:

packets: sent = 4, received = 4, lost = 0 (0% loss),

approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

minimum = 30ms, maximum = 50ms, average = 35ms

and who said cable > dsl ?

....

i rang eircom earlier on and asked if it was possible for my interleaving to be further lowered, i was told no. (expected)

so.. whats every one else's connect like these days? any one on other bb services got any better results?

post your results!

I'll start by copying mIXu's post and give a brief overview of my hardware.

My pc is connected to a WRAP 2c with StarOS running on it via crossover cat5 cable. This router is hooked up to a 20dB antenna on my roof with LMR 400 co-axial cable. This antenna points at an access point on galwayWAN.

I'd like to give a run down of my connection but I honestly don't know that much about it, I know it's 2meg down but I don't know what speed it is up, and what ISP it is on etc, I don't even know where the bloody thing is physically

I upgraded my WAN connection 2 weeks ago with a new cm-9 802.11a/b/g wireless card and saw my pingtimes fall to 10ms to games5.iol.ie. However, in game things were different, pings were erratic, going from 13ms to 500ms and lots of packet loss present, making playing worse than modem. I thought all was lost when tonight, on games5.iol.ie mIXu suggested to change sys_highpriority to "-1". I did it and lo and behold, playable pings!

My ping to games5.iol.ie now goes between 14 and 18ms and to quake.dm4.co.uk it seems to be a stable 26ms.

It's time to own,
que

Im with esat and your ping out ways mine by alot dk is 84 fs and unstable what pissed me off was in my shop ive got 2mb dsl from eircom but i route through limerick from kildare and back to dublin and across the waters so for home i said i'd try esat.

Its def better than eircoms from where im living but still not good enough i ping maybe ten less than when i was on isdn, i still think eircom have a lot of shit to sort out i also got a tip from an insider that eircom have 8mb connections but cant release due to restricitions from goverment <-- e.g. Controller.

Thats all ive got to share

Now take me to the brigg, i wanna see where the real Marines are.....

You can drop those ping times a little further (3-7ms maybe) if you ditch that usb modem and get yourself a router setup. Small difference but long-term it's a sensible investment anyway.

switched to router, ping times dropped back down to normal. it would appear that due to the increase in bandwidth, the usb modem hogged more power from the system thus increasing my ping.

pings have gone back to normal - if not better.

30 to uk, 38 to netherland, 45 to de and 60 to swe.

hello moto!
