I work for a wireless broadband company in Cork - from a point of view of gaming it depends fully on the WISP and also your line of sight.

If you're within a few miles from their transmitter and get a strong and unobstructed signal, then you'll get a good ping these days with any decent wireless company if you go for the right package. Some packages, such as Irish Broadband's ripwave use a different frequency to give them a better tolerance of obstacles and stuff but you get massive packetloss and huge ping times as a result.

I spoke to an Irish guy on IRC and played him on q3 server who iirc had ICE broadband, his ping was unreal. It was like single figure ping on games5.iol.ie - I can't remember his name, so you'll need to confirm it. If you phone them up make sure they know that you'll want to use it for VOIP, and latency and stability is very important to you, you will not accept any packetloss.

I have never dealt with ICE broadband myself so I don't know how competent they are. Try and find out what technology they're using first, and also where their transmitter is... it could be 9 miles away and in that case It might not be very good.

I gave them a call.

The offer a 1MB download and 256K upload for 37.99 a month.

No Download Limit and Installation fee of 149.99.

VOIP is possible. I'm currently 1.5 mile from the mast.

Latency is very good and stable when within 5 mile of the mast.

Killy how big are the antenna they install on the house and is there alot of cableing that need to be run from the antenna into the house some house.

Its a new house i have and the last thing i want is a big monstocity attached.

I don't know what hardware ICE use, it will vary for the different companies. Most companies would have a small enough antenna, like the size of a chess board (square). If they have good installers they'll mount it on the chimney and you'll hardly even notice it. They'll run the cabling in through a hole in the wall, and it will probably consist of just an ethernet cable, or maybe an ethernet cable and a coaxial cable, and it should be tidy and demure, like a Sky Digital install.

Like I said, I have never seen ICE in action so its possible that they have some very bad installers who will make an eyesore out of it (however unlikely) and in that case its best that you are present when they're doing the install and tell them what needs to be done even if you have to pay an extra 40 euros.

That broadband is quite expensive, but I would see that as a good thing, since it would weed out the rabble and kazaa monkeys and promises a better service. The upload is low for wireless, which is often symmetrical, but then again, do you really need more than 256k? It would be handy to have a bigger upload, since 256k could be cutting it a bit short if you have one guy gaming and the other guy using the VOIP, I'm not sure tbh.

If you haven't already done so - post on boards.ie to get a few reports on reliablility and all that, because a lot of wireless companies would be very good on paper but in practice might have a lot of pl because of bad equipment or whatever. Again - the one guy I saw who had it was very good, really low ping and seemingly very stable.

I would definitely have gone for this if it had been available for the year that I was in Leixlip.

illkillya - that guy you spoke to on games5.iol.ie was actually me. i was getting 4-5 ping to the server, but now the service has gone shite. i sometimes even get timeouts etc etc.

jedi - i hope this isnt too late, but stick with dsl instead of icecomms. youll get perfect ping for like the first month, but thats because they give new customers priority for that time, then they push you back to high latency. i pretty much cant play q3 online at the moment.
