for the last month ive had the eircom dsl in work. oooh, i hear you say. i even got it free as part of the dsl trials! ooooh! well, its not so oooh!. in fact, its terrible from a gamers point of view.

i had the dsl installed nice and fast (when they said they were gonna install it, they did). the dsl terminal adapter you get is a speed touch usb from alcatel. software installs within minutes and works a treat.

you get lovely fast downloads from 48kps to 100+kps. the lowest was a 20kps download. so where is the problem? the problem is the ping. the very first hop you get to its own server is 60+ and it slowly gets worse as you ping further away (as per normal). here's how it looks from its first hop to a server on the same backbone.

tracing route to kali.ign.ie

62 ms c104-1.bas1.prp.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.104.1]

62 ms fa0-0.edge1.prp.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.155.97]

62 ms pos1-0.btr1.cra.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.155.145]

62 ms 159.134.125.10

62 ms fa0-0.service2.cra.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.191.71]

63 ms kali.ign.ie [159.134.244.150]

and tracert to barrysworld, you get 78 ping, which, in q3 is about 90. i happen to get 40 ping on eircom isdn going to 55+ in q3.

anyway, the point being, eircom have a long way to go before id bother my arse getting dsl to compete in gaming. great for downloads and other stuff, for gaming.. forget it.

got the same results as MP when i checked out me mates trial eircom DSL in dublin.

however other people I know got the Esat DSL trials outside dublin, and its unreal. solid 25 pings to slosh, and solid 30 to BW. How bad? plus top d/l speed of 690/k. The savage d/l speed maybe down to the fact that there are no others sharing the trial (to the best of my knowledge) and hense they're getting all the bandwidth.

other sickner is eicom's capping d/l, to something like 3gigs a month, anything more than that you'll pay by the meg. ARSE. I dont knwo what esats' rollout plans are eith d/l limits. Im sure they'll do something like that too though, the happy cartel we've alll come to know and love.

that sounds right... i remember a CS player ADSL-triallist giving those figures - 70 ping to Irish servers, 90 to UK.

its the utter bollix you'd just expect from eircon. I wouldn't mind but they purposely make it ping high even though they can make it ping lower if they want.... they do this why ? because they're scabby basts who won't do the job properly if they can make an extra buck.

... it's a matter of pressure I reckon. Half the UK ADSL isp's are utter arse for gaming, but there are some specialist ones (read: nildram) who put the effort into making it work right, and get the hardcore subscribers. If enough people complain, it can get fixed.

The same problem is happening to all german DSL users, they get 90ping to their home country but could get 5-10 if what they call "fastpath" is activated.

that's the thing with eircom. They're sacrificing this "fastpath" thing so they can over subscribe the service and they'd be well aware of this and not inclined to fix it - because well, they are a monopoly.

However the local loop was just unbundled so they're not going to be a monopoly for long and if other service providers start offering better then they'll try to match them.... and until that happens...

we're screwd

Eric, apparently that USB TA's speed depends on how much CPU you are giving it, i.e. your first hop is the big one, all the rest are small. You might be able to improve it a lot more than that. (according to sonic)

... say for sure.

The first hop (to the nildram gateway) is where a better adsl modem would make a difference. But how much of a difference depends on all manner of things - distance from the nearest backbone etc, which is why northern nildram dsl pings 35 while I ping 20.

I have plans to buy a proper pci adsl modem sometime soon, and I do *think* it'll make a difference, but I really can't say it definitely will.

"USB TA's speed depends on how much CPU you are giving it"

hmm - not exactly. I've got the same one (stupid green frog) and what tends to happen is it saps your fps while gaming. Of course, to a certain extent that goes the other way too - you get reduced xfer rates, but not enough to spectacularly affect ping.

Ways to reduce it, I've found, are:
- don't use your gaming PC as the server. I've got a linux box downstairs doing it
- get a pci adsl modem (I can recommend one if you want)
- don't use windows for the server. Seriously, my ping went down by about 10 when I moved to linux.

If you do all the above, your ping might drop by anywhere between 0 and 20. s'not a cheap way of doing it really tho.

when i used to play cs on ADSL i pinged between 65 (jolt) to 90-100 (bw) and 120+ (ukcsr.. shite)

id still get it if it was available at a reasonable price though and wasn't capped

Just happened to see this thread and i have to say that it's because of the interleave thing. Who normally pings 70 to his isp with interleave has about 20 without it, and if the quality of the DSL line is good (and DSLAM settings are right) then you'll get better ping when your download AND upload stream rises. In order for this to work you indeed need to have DSLAM settings configured right.

While i'm on a shitty finnish Sonera ADSL with 16-20ms first hop all other isps in finland ping about 10ms, or even lower. It's just the matter of: DSLAM settings, upload/download speed, ADSL card, line quality.

Btw sonera sucks, worst routing ever :>

you may make a small difference to the ping by tweaking, but eircom use interleaving so they can have less packet loss and support connections further from the exchange. So 60 instead of 20 pings. A crappy USB dsl modem isn't going to be helping you, but it's probably only responsible for 5-10 miliseconds difference max.
