My current conn sucks a big fat cock as I am sharing it with a few lads, I tend to 999 every 60 secs or so in a game. I am moving house soon and will be getting my own line. In the meantime, what I would like to do if its possible, is get in a wireless conn that I will be able to move when I move gaff. (assuming obviously that the same provider is available in the new place blah)

Is there anyone using wireless for games that gets a decent conn, and who is the provider?

irish broadband are the provider in dublin
as far as i know theyre decent( mates say so) but have no clue for gaming
Try ntl if you have cable in the house, they do free 3 month 3 meg , then after that switch to eircom cos they give free 2 month , might be only 2 meg download and then after that u can decide which u prefer. As far as i know there is no free irish broadband stuff.

There are a lot of wireless providers in Dublin... Irish broadband are one crowd you should definitely not even consider for games. See any of the 1000 threads about them on boards.ie or just ask pyro/legion/quozl etc and youll know to stay away from them.

Check out jedis thread from a couple of weeks ago on this site about ICE broadband - potentially a v.good alternative if theyre where you are, depending on the pings.

The problem with wireless is it is always a risk, you could come out having the best connect in Ireland, or you could have the worst, its all down to the quality of service provided to you by the WISP and by the line of sight/quality of equipment between you and the provider.

If I were able to get wireless broadband, I would probably go with Digiweb Metro. That SHOULD give good ping, 3mb/512k and a VOIP phone number included for 35euro per month. Their coverage would be better than most ppl so you could move it with you to the next house if they allow it, although they would probably charge you an installation fee for doing so. Again, it is always a risk, and its amazing how incompetent all of the irish wireless ISPs are.

Take a look at broadband.gov.ie to see what services are available in the area you are thinking about, and look into each one.

One of my mates from college (Yook) has Icecomms, dont even bother with it. Great ping for 30 seconds and then lag out for 20.

Anything Voip related would need decent latency, so maybe attack it from that angle?

I wouldnt even game on a wireless connection from PC to router.

If there was a half decent company offering gameable wireless in Ireland, a lot of people would be jumping on it, sadly I dont think there is.

Eircom/Esat DSL* is perfectly fine for online gaming.

But if you are lucky enough to live in an area covered by NTLs cable network, then thatd be a better option.

Dont go for UTV dsl, though because AFAIK, they dont peer in ireland, and all your traffic gets routed through level3 in london or somesuch. This will bring down your pings by a nice bit(think 100)

utv in northern ireland sucks ass, my little bro went with the 2mb service, rarely gets 2mb and pings are high 50s to uk servers. Im on ntl (still) 3mb and finally get a decent connect to s.ireland, 20~ on games4 when my house mates arent leeching, dont have a clue about connects down south thou.

10mb soon \o/

Ya im on UTV myself. Connections suck to pretty much everywhere since everything is routed through london. The pings register as 60-100 to games4, but it plays like 300.

quetzal uses IrishWAN free wireless afaik... his bandwidth would be coming from an ESAT leased line or something though.
