| No joy for Ireland in the end, as we faced off against Estonia tonight. On the first map we were missing Overlord, Searrard, and Dest, so I had to play on my ISDN (on a German server). It was their map, Sandstorm, which they won 167-128 The Irish team was Vinnit, sno, windowlicker, killy, while Estonia had scient, mth, vrz, and megro. As you would expect in a Quake 4 match, the server crashed after the first map, and we spent an hour trying to find a new one. By the time we had found a new server, Dest was back, and despite not having played Quake 4 for several months, I knew he would do better than I could on my ISDN. And it turned out to be a very close game indeed, with Estonia taking the victory by 2 frags in the end, 87-85.
So that concludes Irelands involvement in this season of the Nations Cup. Disappointing that a small and semi-active community has now deteriorated into a very small and inactive community. Well done to the core players who stuck with it and made the commitment for the sake of the team - it says a lot when a country with 6 or 7 players has no problem fielding a team while a country like the Netherlands with 100 players struggle to get 4. Although the Nations Cup has lost nearly all value in recent years, due in part to the frequency of the event, it is good to have representation there. Consider that the upcoming ESWC has 50 countries represented, including the likes of Mongolia and Martinique, and Ireland is not one of those countries.
