No mention of qwack at all, but this is still good for the future of ahem, "cyber athletes". Athletes! BwAHAAHA ROFFLECOPTER! Someone pass me another pie:

quote :
In a press release, WCG said that Microsoft has signed on to sponsor not only this falls worldwide competition in Italy, but also national championships in South Korea and the US, as well as three "pan-regional" championships. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but in addition to whatever financial considerations exist, Microsoft will be supplying all the hardware for the 2006 through 2008 competitions. Thats right, all the games will be contested on Windows PCs (no surprise there) and the Xbox 360.

Microsoft will provide games, consoles, Xbox Live online game service, and peripheral equipment for all WCG events. Microsoft will also supply players with state-of-the-art consoles at WCG events.

At the 2005 World Cyber Games, competition covered 6 PC titles (Counter-Strike: Source, FIFA Soccer 2005, Need for Speed: Underground 2, StarCraft: Brood War, WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War) and 2 console games (Dead or Alive Ultimate and Halo 2).

Microsoft is now getting a massive part of the gaming world after purposely selling the first XBox without making any profits and, like they did with their operating system, they will push for their products first and eat the competition alive.

I dont think that the marketing methods of that company are really healthy for the business in general so when I see Microsoft entering the cyber-gaming area, I tend to be a little sceptical about the future of cyber athletes.

Thats not a new methodology for marketing for MS. Nintendo and Sony do the same thing with their consoles. Printer manufacturers do the same: cheap printers, expensive toner/cartridges. Razors: cheap handle, expensive blades. Its all around you, man, youre just blinded by spending too much time on OSS bulletin boards, venting about the evils of microsoft; youre losing the ability to think and are acting like the other sheep. Yeah, Microsoft is evil, but if their XBox and the Live platform really was a piece of shit, noone would use them, no matter how cheap. XBox Live really has set the bar for the other players in the online space.

On the other hand, the way they marketed Windows _was_ underhand and immoral, but it is not comparable to their console marketing; this included:

- The OEM licensing model that they used to use forced manufacturers to pay a fee for every box they shipped, regardless whether or not it was shipped with MSDOS on it. So, even if they did put DRDOS on a new system, they would still be paying Microsoft. Google for per-CPU licensing DOS.

- placing code in early versions of Windows that would cause it to emit warnings if it discovered it was running on top of a DOS that wasnt MSDOS, e.g DRDOS. Google for "AARD code"

- embedding Internet Explorer into Windows to push other browser makers out of business, namely Netscape. You could argue that Netscape were putting themselves out of business quite nicely by themselves thank you (netscape 4 anyone?), but hardly the point.

- using undocumented, and faster, native NT APIs in their office suite, while their opponents had to use the documented win32 APIs, thus giving them an unfair and anti-competitive edge.

This is just a small list of some of the major issues in the past if you _really_ want to pick on them, and no offence Laurent, but as much I dislike Microsofts behaviour in the past, Im pretty tired of hearing meaningless FUD spouted by the haters. Your analysis is not just misguided, its completely and entirely wrong.

Oh, and Im posting this with FireFox 1.5.0.2

Relax Ois,

1) I havent criticised the XBox platform itself.
2) I really dont think they have decided to sponsor the world cyber games to help out the gaming community. But like I said: when I see Microsoft entering the cyber-gaming area, I tend to be a little sceptical about the future of cyber athletes, thats all.
3) My post wasnt an in-depth analysis of the Microsoft marketing strategy. Yet the fact that the EU is battling with them in court for antitrust practices means something no? But maybe they dont have a clue and you should write to tell them how "completely and entirely wrong" they are: http://europa.eu.int/
4) "Its all around you, man, youre just blinded by spending too much time on OSS bulletin boards, venting about the evils of microsoft; youre losing the ability to think and are acting like the other sheep." Man, seriously, relax the head ...

I didnt mean to pick on you personally Laurent, so dont take offense, please.

re: 1)
xbox is alright, never said nowt about it

re: 2)
No company (e.g. money-making entity) m$ or otherwise, ever gets involved with sponsorship for pure philantropy. Its about making money. Always.

re: 3)
I listed the reasons for the anti-trust case in my previous post. I agree with the EU. Mostly for reasons of keeping software patents out of europe.

re: 4)
sheep! sheep! sheep! go write a song with RMS ( http://www.gnu.org/music/free-software-song.html ) or something

I AM RELAXED YOU F**KER!!$%#
