great fun last night at the team.ie training. loads of players
turned up including skelter, koopa, jedi, gerry, triock,
m1ke, illkillya, el_pres and mindphuck
. unfortunately myself and ik had
to play on oceanfree which sometimes can be terrible and adhering to murphys
law, yes, it was terrible. i was double the ping of everyone else. fuck it
anyway.

theres nothing like a bit of good competition and the games were very
competitive tho. m1ke and jedi showed that they are a good partnership together,
dominating the ra on dm7. i couldn't compete in close fights, which made things
hard for our team of koopa, gerry, skelt. teamplay fell to bits unfortunately as
we started to lose heavily. being forced back into rl and quad areas. when we
did take ra a few times, we were fragmented and everyone wasnt at ra to hold it.
dm7 is such a tight level. with every move so important, every single frag can
cause a power shift.

the second game was dm14tmp. we started well, taking the first quad , holding
off the other team and then moving in towards ra and taking it easily with the
enemy team still hurt from trying to secure quad. then my pc crashed and then
wouldnt start! jesus! i laughed. i nearly cried hehe. chaos stepped in in my
place and the team seemed to do well. another close game with jedi, mike,
ilkillya and mindphuck winning that one again. cant really comment on the game
further as i didnt see it till 2 mins from the end. looking forward to the demos
which should be available on www.quake.ie
later today.

lessons:

every good and bad experience is a lesson to learn right? well today i
learned that shit happens and you just have to dig in and make do. hopefully we
will continue the team.ie training sessions every week and get a good level of
teamplay going with all the irish q3 players. i thought it was interesting
seeing ik and mike playing on the same team hehe. look forward to seeing how
they tped. will prolly have more after i watch the demos of the games..

ocean is a very unreliable isp - perfect most nights, but it always goes when you need it most. it never happened to me playing clanarena (nearly every night) but it happened twice playing league matches and also last night. i reconnected to iol and had a good low ping game later - i hope they accept that over the lagg0red performances of the earlier games. you will definitely need a back up connection, iol and indigo seem the best alternatives, maybe even buyandsell if you're stuck

I get no decent connections from any isp except Oceanfree and Eircom sometimes. IOL and Indigo give me 150 spikes all the time. Eircom is around 80 ping with spikes also. The only decent connection ( when its good is oceanfreee) and when its good its very very good but as u said ik its terrbile when u need it most.

No offence dave, it's not surprising you had bad connection problems. Your settings were rate 10000, snaps 100, maxpackets 100!!

Your on a single ISDN line not ethernet, course your gonna have problems with those settings and anyone who tells u different is wrong. Also com_maxfps DOES effeect your connect!

My setup -

max_packets 36

snaps 40

rate - 62500 (8000 if playing on local servers)

I had dual isdn line connected to try and dampen down the packet loss and ping spikes

your rate might have been a little low @ 10000 then.... you can go to 15000/16000 with dual isdn.

i know fuck all about the setting for it but heres an observation, on lan in order to get the damn game smooth i run rate 25000 snaps 125 the server has sv_fps 125 and my maxpackets are 125 com_maxfps 125 too, my ping on LAN is between 25 - 35 it is the only way i can make it as smooth as qw

whenever im on the isdn in work, i open 4 channels so its 256k, or else play on the 10mbit if i even dare put my maxpackets over 50 my ping skyrockets, albeit its smoother, snaps seems to make little difference on net. just an observation

36 maxpackets is slightly low IMHO. I use maxpackets 85, it doesnt raise the ping very much, and it makes the other players movement much smoother.
