recently, chorus announced their
solutions. i took the time to check out their prices and what they offer. there's two solutions which would be ideal for the gamer - residential and business. looking at the two solutions their not bad. discounting the modems, as most of us gamers can get cheaper and probably better modems than what they can supply, the actual line rental is quite reasonable. considering it is a 24/7 connect, it would probably save alot of us a huge amount of money in the long run.

what i wasn't able to find out is the actual bandwidth. they say 'up to 512k', but this does not mean that its a dedicated 512k nor does it mean
that the residential user gets 512k. another thing was the types of modems their
supplying, what make are they? and how come their so damn expensive? their flat rate is
dead cool, 3gb is excellent and even 6gb is over the top, but still nice. oh, and another thing, i asked them for ping times to various servers across the uk and europe. of course there's feck all point in getting this if the connectivity/ routing sucks beyond belief. so.. i await their reply's and hopefully, we might get the answers were looking for.

residential user

high speed modem installation - irp 150.00 inc. vat

monthly rental - irp 40.00 inc. vat

monthly flat rate download limit - 3gb

volume charge above limit - 2p per mb

business / single user

high speed modem installation - irp 299.00 exc. vat

monthly rental - irp 79.00 exc. vat

monthly flat rate download limit - 6gb

volume charge above limit - 2p per mb

check them out at www.chorus.ie.

Imho the 3gb limit is too small, at 512k, I can get about 250mb/hour which means 12hours of 'full speed' downloading in a whole month, which would easily be clocked up :|

Is this only available through cable or do they have a sort of MMDS service available too?

There is a thread on boards.ie in the quake section about this very thing in Limerick.
Chorus offer wireless in Limerick if u are within line of sight of Keeper Hill.

Guys, there is a 8x difference in a Gigabit versus a Gigabyte. The official Chorus docs use the former nomenclature, thus implying a 3Gb/8 = 384 kilobyte (KB) transfer limit, if this is what they mean. I have emailed them asking to clarify this point; this is exactly the kind of nasty sh*t vapourware (yes, it is vapourware so far) marketing depts like to pull on us poor folk. I'll post the answer when I get it.

Why? From that last time I looked at that post it looked like another Vorosha / Jaden expedition and had totally gone off the point. At least here, I might get some bloody answers!

Fair enough Ronan, if you believe that, well, ok. But the capitalisation is fairly specific, if you ask me. Note the "3Gb" and the "2p/MB". Normally, transfer IS rated in bytes, not bits, whereas bandwith is usually in bits. But techies don't write the blurbs...

This is dealing with broadband which would mean the amount of data transfered is larger so its GB

I'd agree m1rv, convention would dictate that, but these are thieving limerick gypsies intent on making as much money as possible -- my first email to them was answered promptly, same day in fact (asking about prices). I asked them to clarify the Gb/GB issue on wednesday and I've still not received a response -- draw your own conclusions...

It looks very much to me like the business offer is basically 2 residential ones :/

The line speed is the same, the dl limit is exactly double, the price is almost exactly double (a 0.1% saving :o) and the installation is double the price. Would u not be better off getting 2 x 512Kb lines for the same price instead of 1 business one? :/

eric its only in the limerick area, it uses a microwave dish and you have to have line of sight of keeper hill in limerick. their high speed modem is some kind of yoke that connects to the dish, you plug your network card into it.

Sonic shutup, I can get you, you know that. I know where you live. Right nextdoor. If you say Rowter again it will be the last thing you say.

Right, rang chorus last year and asked them when they would have cable in my area (Maynooth). They said sometime b4 xmas r maybe a wee bit after. I had isdn ordered at this stage and on hearing this canceled it as tho i had my doubts, i didnt wanna feel like a pillock getting isdn (by the time eir con got round to it), cable could be on my door step. So, mailed them recently since the webbie aint v informative on when and where etc. and they said, they dont know, but its very possible that it will be within the next 6 to 12 months. U'd think they can plan these roll outs a little better. Sounds like an NTL job to me and prolly will b years down the round, annoying aint it.
