in an effort to further professionalize the sport of competitive gaming, the cpl will no longer allow players to represent themselves with a nickname in league tournaments. the cpl now requires that all players use their surnames in official cpl matches.

for example, john smith, formerly known as wrecker from team zbg, will now be zbg|smith. variations to this format will be allowed for duplicate surnames within a team. all team tags will be uniform and subject to approval by the league.

CPL arse elbow couldn't their from tell their.

This is just a start I suspect, soon we can expect teams to be in some form of uniform (presumably designed by the CPL and having no relation to either their nationality or clan colours)

Somebody show them the plot before CPL-Europe lose it too.

If anything this will make organisation more difficult, as most people try hard to choose a unique nickname, but there are going to be lots of duplicate surnames out there.

If i was ever to compete in another CPL event, i think id insist on that I spelt my surname in gaelic irish. HAT|ÒMoonaigh. Lets see the feckers modify quake to cater for the Foda's.

Oh and think of all the Japanese players! Some of their names are soo long, never mind the symbols!

Of course some smartarse "pro" with an endorsement for "Uncle Tom's Pork Products Ltd" could always change his name by deed poll....

Overall I think its a pretty good idea. Obviously their intention is to legitimise computer gaming to a wider audience, and guess what happens when a mother sees her 8 year old kid looking up to "fatality", "death", "kane" etc.

Its something that has been coming a long time and shouldnt really be that unexpected either.
