just read this over on adsl.ie that eircom have decided to delay the launch of their i-stream product.

due to of ongoing discussions with the office of the director of telecommunications regulation [odtr], eircom regrets to announce that the commercial launch of , eircom's new adsl service, scheduled for today (tuesday 2nd october 2001) has been postponed. eircom will make every effort to resolve all outstanding issues with the odtr and to bring adsl technology to customers as soon as possible.

looks like us wee-people are gonna be stuck with isdn for a good while longer yet.

This could be a good thing rather than a bad thing. Better to have to wait a little while longer and get a cheaper service than pay the price they are currently asking.

Swift would be doing about 7200rpm in his grave at present. The standard of public debate and satire over Eircom is at best pubescent and at worst slanderous.

You seem to have a high horse over Eircom.

In fairness, if you have something solid to say, come out with it and we'd have a good debate about it.

Well TBH, I believe that most ppl really are expecting far too much. You must remember that this is Ireland, and we tend to do things differently here.

There has been a lot of call for government intervention in the matter of rolling out DSL at a reasonable price. With a Fianna Fail/PD coalition, this is entirely unreasonable to expect. The current government places its loyalties in a form of "turbo-capitalism" (not my term) which automatically precludes any form of socialist spending á la France.

The reaction I've seen on the boards and in general has disappointed my immensely. In effect people have objected to Eircom's actions in the manner of Harry Enfield's Kevin character. As I gather it, people want both Eircom and the government to act in a manner that is alien to both of them i.e. a fair and socially responsible one.

Install a Labour government at the next general election Worked for the Brits.

P.S. MP, its hard to get up on a high horse when you've taken the weaker side of a debate just for the sake of it

Yeah, I think I'm allowed some sleep. Sorry if you had to keep refreshing every few seconds. Didn't you get bored after the first 8 hours ?

I just read all that Robbo. Looks great. Reads nice and might actually make some
sence to alot of people. Here's the thing. While YOU might make sence to me and some
more mature gamers, you DO NOT make sence to the average gamer. This is after all
what its about : gaming and what gamers want, not what the politcians or the money makers want.

As you put it : 'public debate and satire over Eircom is at best pubescent and at worst slanderous'. But of course it is, its said by thousands of Kids. They dont give a shit what Fianna Fail TD has piles or what Eircom manager did or didn't do. Its about children.. 'pubenscent' children who dont care. They want their decent connections, they want their play stations, they want their 30000 fps GFX cards with onboard GPU's, they want their Ultra Cool PC's and their gameboys!! They WANT!!

Why? 'Cos its gaming, its all about having fun and when people like the government and Eircom dont let them have it, they don't want to know and the arguements which you have so closely watched and commented upon are made by frustrated kids (and adults) who want to have the best that gaming can offer.

So, while you can do name dropping and talk the talk about commerce and politics, it wont really have an effect on what gamers want and can afford. Hence, why its so childish? because its about children, young and old, who all want to have fun.

And while they some may understand Eircom, the money makers and the politicians, it won't change the fact that gamers, who are mostly young and can't afford to pay call charges, don't give a flying toss who provides them with a decent connect as long as they can get one. Do you have kids? Have you tried to take away your 1 year olds favourite toy away from him? see how long he screams?

I agree with most of what you are saying there Robbo.

It's clear to me there's something fundamentally wrong behind eircom/the governments treatment of the Irish public - we deserve better, and in the end it was our fault in making them a private company in the first place - it has all turned into a right messup.

However every complaint, problem, pubescent and satrical jive the general public (yes even the younger people)at eircom is totally fair and deservedly spoken - they've been ripped off and they've a right to mouth off about it and not take it lying down - and to organise pressure and lobby groups.

As for installing a labour government, yea imo they're the best of a very bad bunch - but seem to have totally missed the telecom / broadband wave that other governments around the world have recognised. I heard literally nothing about it during their party conference a few days ago and nothing about it mentioned on their web site - i'll only vote for my local labour candidate if they hold some sort of opinion on it... otherwise ... i'll vote on the basis of good character.

In fairness no political party is using the local loop/DSL as an election platform.

Perhaps I should have a word with my local Socialist Worker nutters...

Why assume the delay will bring us a cheaper DSL service? Has anyone entertained the notion that perhaps the ODTR think the offer price is too _low_ and as such is anticompetitive?

It seems that the ODTR is more concerned that the wholesale price is too close to the retail price, and they are urging Eircon to lower that price. Chances are that the best we can hope for is a slightly more competitive price from someone like Esat
