its always nice to see a modemer connecting to a server while you're sitting on a smooth, crisp 50 ping, 0% pl. it even nicer when they start to blow themselves up, freeze in midair, and try to rail you while you lag them out even more with some plasma spam. try to remember how disadvantaged these guys are when compared to lpb's. people say q3 is unplayable on isdn...

think how much these hpb's suffer. if you're feeling angry about something, or depressed or whatever, you can load up q3 and take it out on a load of newbies on an enlish server... or you can have a clan match or something. modemers can only get more frustrated and angry when they get lag-killed by an icq-using cable fag9t who doesn't even strafe! this affects their whole life! imagine you're feeling suicidal or totally pissed off at something. a lpb can find some respite on a q3 server, or if you find that head-wrecking, you can always play qw or something, but you'll have low ping no matter what. modemers do not get that respite, but will only be sucked into a deeper depression. instead they're in exile - no modem leagues, no modem clans, 1 uk modem duelling league which non-uk people are not allowed enter.

davoc put is best: jumping across center on dm3, getting the megahealth on q3dm11, rocket jumping to ra on t4... you can always rely on your good old friend spike to show up.
to add insult to injury, esat are cutting out nolimits. for the past year, modemers always had one advantage over most irish lpb's.... they weren't spending a load on phone bills. that is set to change as these poor hpb's will be paying per minute for a frequently interrupted 4k/s download and ping of 200. so the next time you see someone fall into the fog of death, only to spring back out and kill himself with his own grenade, consider the 40 seconds he spent connecting only to be mocked by spike.

Anyone who says Q3 is unplayable on ISDN hasn't had to play on modem. I used to play on a 33k modem and still enjoyed it - it's just a matter of getting used to it. Playing on ISDN with sub-100 ping is very easy to get used to if you play on it often, it's nearly as good as LAN compared to 200-300 hedgehog ping on a fsking winmodem.

speaking as a current hpb myself, its been wearing a bit thin for a while really.

I join a server with say 4 or 5 isdn players on, my ping is fairly smooth and very playable. It only takes 2 or 3 broadband players to join and I'm spiking to 600 and running into my own rockets (or in extreme cases, dodging my own rails).

Still, come 5th of april I should be on ISDN, and *then* they'll be sorry!

you were in the back of my mind the whole time while i wrote this - the one true hpb i would nearly pay for your cable after all the 800ping suffering you had to put up with. Crusader - in 2 weeks, u won't know what hit u the transition from modem to ISDN is almost as good as from modem to LAN. soon tho u'll forget what it was like as a hpb, and start complaining when your ping spikes to 70

Damn right iky!
quake 3 has one last chance in my books, this new patch with its "4:1 compression".
If this is as shit as i think it will be -remember iD's boast when they laucnhed q3?- quake 3 is going in the bin. Its pathetic and no it isnt helped by (pe)Esat - 300 ping to anywhere with gaps every 2 seconds so you can have a breather. Pfft.
I can console my self with the thought that som1 has pity for us. Its no longer a case of ahh HPW I 0WN j00!
IM SICK OF TRYING TO LIVE 250MS INTO THE FUTURE!
sniff *saik breaks*

all power to cable companies!
