| as some of you may know, i helped dnc over the weekend run the counter-strike cpl
qualifiers for the cpl holland event. over the last month or so, i have been talking
to meglome and the guys there and generally being there for advice on how things should be
ran. i spent some of last week doing up a sexy excel spreadsheet which does all the
calculations and stuff of who's in the upper and lower brackets. the time taking doing
that, really paid off on saturday.
from past experiences in running lans and cpl comps, etc, i knew pretty much what to
expect and do. and in the usual mp manner i started getting things into ship shape
and running. unfortunately with over 80+ people there, you don't always have time
for the softly softly approach and i do apologise if i upset anyone with the manner in how
i do things. i had a job to do and it needed getting done. i hope you
can understand this.
it was a really great day and although it went on till the early hours of sunday (and i
was all narky at that stage .. who wasn't?) it was a really excellent day. big
kudos to gary (meglome), gavin (urm, what is your nick?)
and oisin (telgere) for getting things done properly and above board.
you guys were both, always there and always eager to help any player with problems
with pc's, requests, etc.. i was delighted to see people wholeheartedly give help.
a couple of things i would like to get into. one, was the attempted cheating that
was going on. i saw a huge amount of cheating from the people who brought scripts
with them. now, let me explain why its considered cheating. 'if your script
does anything but buy and communication binds, it basically falls into the 'cheating'
bracket. it should not have things that do fast grenades, +jump+duck, or recoil
scripts.
on saturday, i kept a watchful eye on this as much as possible. but, what
absolutely amazed me was that some players came up to me and asked me could they use
changed sprites and use a program (which i wont mention) to enhance their cs script with
basically puts all the stuff that's not supposed to be in your script, into it!.
what amazed me even more is i don't think they realise how wrong that can be.
this is arguementable to the extreme and i'm sure countless of treads and forums
have already gone through this.
the 2nd thing which comes to mind about the cs community is how fresh and new it all
is. on saturday, most of the players there have talked to other cs players on-line,
but never have met each other in person. all those nasty things that people said to
each other on the boards just disappeared when the offended person said hello the
'offender' and realised that he's not such a jerk.
i watched from a 3rd person pov and saw friendships being made, some get stronger and
everyone having a really good time. if you know dnc, you will realise there isn't a
huge amount of room inside for 80 odd players. most of them were happily standing
outside of the place looking in at the two huge plasma screens, having a smoke and chat
with their mates. the atmosphere was carnival like with alot of happy (and some
drunk) faces and it brought me back to the first big lan of irish on-line gaming,
quakefest. this thought alone made me look at the current irish quake scene and i
finally now have come to terms with the fact - irish quake is dead. for now, i leave
you with that thought.
