in recent seasons, irish clans have been crippled by soaring pings in fights against broadband players, which some people have attributed to high maxpackets settings. i've heard just as many people say that this is a myth, and that this command does not lag the opponent. ster on challenge-fr has written a detailed article on how the cl_maxpacket command effects users and their opponent. its a bit too technical for me, but you might be able to make something of it read the article here.

From what I remember of the research done into this before (by Requiem and Leviathon), rate only affects the connection between you and the server, and for some undecided reason maxpax affects both your connection to the server and the connection of other ppl around you. To forestall any "arguments", my major complaint is not that people have faster connections than myself (much as I'd like broadband or faster myself , but that people with those faster connections can detrimentally affect *my* connection. This is, imo, unfair, and especially so for those people whose connections to BW are already on the flaky side of "tolerable". Lag doesn't come into it directly, everyone experiences it to some degree, but I think people have the right to expect to only suffer lag induced by their connection to the server, not to have it increased by someone elses's connection settings.
