| after taking a wonder around the some of the challenge-network sites,
i encountered an interesting article on
target="_blank">ch-malaysia by
nael about violence within the gaming communities of both quake3 and counter-strike. since broadband is not a cheap solution to connectivity in malaysia, most gamers meet in cybercafes and from there, players vent their anger on each other. whilst this is not exactly an unheard of thing to occur in ireland (*cough*), i have never heard of any arguments leading to people ending up in hospital or loosing an eye over a game. the article is definately worth a read.
clan wars are no longer confined within the limits of a virtual game server. fights have broken out after rounds of counter-strike, usually over silly matters such as the spraying of paint over a victim’s body or cutting it up, obvious ghosting, peeking at others’ screens, insulting or swearing at the opposition, wearing a certain clan tag, “borrowing” a person’s handle, killing your own teammate by accident or otherwise, unfortunate miscommunication and boasting. also, while nael describes how violent computer games may have become in malaysia, -gt-[ghost]goes on to talk about how he would like to promote both the q3 and cs communites together. what i found a growing thrend, is what he describes as the growing popularity of cs over q3. alot more players are turning to cs, especially the first time gamers as it is a much easier game to play. this 'taking' of the newbies has caused an amount of animosity by the q3 players over the cs community and has contributed to the violence in malaysia.
i see alot of q3 clans either creating a cs team or moving over to cs entirely. although cs is still a relatively new game in terms of quake, it has become a recognised team game by the cpl and could possibly turn cs into 'the' game of the future. anyway, both columns are worth a good read as they raise some very interesting arguements.
