gamespy is used for searching the internet for games. usually what people do is check
their "regular" servers, and if there is nobody playing, just load up gamespy,
find the server with the lowest ping, and join it for a game.
get this programme over at http://www.gamespy.com

mirc is an internet chat programme, people use it to connect to irc servers. on these irc
servers are "channels", like rooms, where people meet. channels are prefixed
with a hash mark '#', and quake channels normally have the country code after it e.g.
#quake.ie or #bio. you get mirc at http://www.mirc.co.uk.
when you set it up, fill out the normal bullshit like your name etc. then, when it asks
you for a server, you put in either irc.b0rk.co.uk or irc.intensive.co.uk
there are others too, but who cares. when you connect to this server, and it offers you
channels to join, you type in "#quake.ie", and then you will be brought in where
all the irish quakers meet online. don't try talking to daneel, dors, or giskard, they are
ircbots. have fun.
