this is what your main
screen looks like. click on setup.
you will be brought to this screen
:-
player options (
href="images-help/player.jpg" target="_blank">click here for the player settings screen)
1) name : choose your name
carefully, you’re going to be using it for a long time. "buttercup" might
sound funny, but more than likely you’ll regret it later on. the sample name there is
ndzero. you will notice it is written as ^4nd^7zero. colours are done by putting ^ in
front of 1-7. play with it til you find a combo you like.
2) handicap : ignore this.
3) effects : this is basically the colour of your railgun trail.
4) model : click on the model button to choose your model. this is what you’ll
look like in the game, whatever takes your fancy. most people use sarge, (pictured here),
as he is the standard model.
controls (
href="images-help/look.jpg" target="_blank">click here for the controls screen)
right, that's the easy shit done. next is the controls
menu, which is split up into look, move, shoot and misc.
remember you want to setup your keys whatever way you feel comfortable with, by far the
best and most common is mouse and keyboard (mouse for aiming/firing/jumping, keyboard for
weapons and movements), so if you never used the mouse in gaming before, now is the time
to learn.
we'll start with the look options.
ok, you want to keep it more or less as it is there.
mouse speed is pretty irrelevant, you be setting that later on with a different
command.
leave smooth mouse on, it feels a lot better when you are playing.
invert mouse depends on you. if you are used to flight simulators, leave it on.
that means when you pull back on the mouse, you look up.
look up, look down, mouse look and center view aren't used, because you use
the mouse for all this.
most people don't use zoom, but if you fancy using it, pick a key for zoom view.
ignore the joystick commands, most people don't use them for quake3.
move (click here
for the movement screen)
always run : leave this on always, if you walk you are dead. so there is no
need for the run/walk option.
walk forward, backpedal, step left, step right : ok then. with your main movement,
there are a few serious recommendations here. in older games, people used to have their 4
keys : forward, back, turn left and right. these days, everyone uses the mouse to
look/turn left and right, and uses the traditional left/right keys for sidestepping left
and right. the reason is this, (and you can see this if you try it), if you hold the
left-sidestep button while slowly looking right with the mouse, you will turn in a circle.
this is ideal for when you are fighting an enemy, you can circle him while keeping your
crosshair on him and shooting.
the keyboard setup we recommend is called wasd, this breaks down as w = walk
forward, s = backpedal, a = step left, d = step right. in the picture above, it's set
to sxzc, but that's just my own dodgy settings.
up/jump is always set to mouse2, i.e. the right mouse button.
down/crouch is essential. i use the shift button, but that's because it's close to
the sxzc configuration that i use. pick a button that's handy to reach, but remember you
need plenty of keys for your weapons. ignore the last three options there, they are
bullshit aswell.
shoot (
href="images-help/shoot.jpg" target="_blank">click here for the shoot screen)
attack is the button you use to fire your weapon. we
strongly recommend you bind mouse1 for attack (the left button on your mouse) now
you can aim and fire with your mouse.
important: you are now about to assign keys for your weapons, the default keys are
1,2,3,4 etc.. for the corresponding weapons, while this makes sense, in the heat of battle
you will want keys that are close to your movement keys (wasd) so that you
can change weapons fluidly and seamlessly without pausing or affecting your movement too
much. if you look down at your wasd keys now, you will see that the closest keys
are q, e, r, f, c, x, z (capslock cannot be used and tab is the universal key to
check your scores). if you have a third mouse button and/or a mousewheel these can also be
used, as well as other keys that are close by (1, 2, 3, v, etc). it's up to you. in a
nutshell, you want to be able to change weapons without taking your eyes off the screen,
if your weapon keys are close to your movement keys you will soon find changing weapons an
easy task.
we have a quick description of what the weapons do on the
target="_self">weapons page, because you are better off having the good weapons and
most common ones bound to the keys closer to your movement keys. we don't have the exact
statistics for the weapons yet, (damage points per bullet etc), but we will update this
when we get them.
misc (
href="images-help/misc.jpg" target="_blank">click here for the miscellaneous screen)
show scores is set to tab by default, no point in changing this.
use item is necessary, but not used too much. you use it when you pick up items
like a personal teleporter or a medikit. if you pick something like u for it, it would be
close enough to use it pretty quickly, but yet not hogging one of your main weapon keys.
gesture makes your man kind of dance around the place. it's more taking the piss
than anything.
chat is self-explanatory, most people use t for talk. if you use normal chat,
everyone hears what you say.
chat team is for when you are in a war/ctf game. it sends a message to just your
teammates, e.g. "red armor available", or "help me at the flag".
chat target/attacker are pretty pointless, ignore them.
game options (
href="images-help/gameoptions.jpg" target="_blank">click here for the game options
screen)
right. first, choose whatever crosshair you feel
comfortable with. it's a matter of taste.
simple items - on. it changes the fancy rotating weapons etc into 2d picture, but
it makes the game run faster.
marks on walls, ejecting brass, dynamic lighting - off. these are little party
pieces that will mess with your game.
identify target - on. i think it's kinda better to see who you are looking at, for
example, if i am playing in an ffa, and with a load of shit players except for bunny, i
want to pick on him to prevent him winning.
high quality sky - on/off. this is more bullshit that will slow down the game, but
it is useful for railing someone up in the air, it gives you a background.
sync every frame - on. makes the game smoother.
force player models - on. some people you play against think it's funny to pick the
"bones" model, and run around being really hard to hit. if you leave this on,
everybody looks like the model you pick.
draw team overlay - on. it's a tiny little window on your screen, (in this case,
the upper right hand side), that tells you details about your teammates. very handy.
automatic downloading - on/off. it's up to you. if you join a server that is
running a mod that you don't have, it will automatically download it. this is good, but it
does mean that you will be sitting there playing with yourself for the ten minutes while
it's downloading.
system setup (click
here for the system setup screen)
set your graphics up more or less the way they are here,
depending on your graphics card. if it's a bit slower, (tnt, voodoo2/3), set color
depth and texture quality to 16-bit. there isn't really anything much else in
that section, except go to the network section and set your data rate. this is
basically whether or not you are on cable, isdn, modem etc.
phew, that was a hard, wasn't it? well, you only have to do
this once. you are most of the way there now, just the
target="_self">console configuration left.
