| right. if you are still having trouble
finding your console key, it is directly left of the "1" key, below the
"esc" key, and above the tab key. the console is important in a game for a few
reasons, the main one being that you can change your configuration extremely fast if
something is messed up, like your sensitivity.
the console also records anything that comes up on the screen, as you can see in the
picture below. this is good, because in a team game, you might be so busy whoring around
the level or buried in a fight that you don't see what your teammate said. it's just a
case of hitting the button to see. in the picture below, don't confuse
"zero(shotgun)" as being the gun i happen to be holding in my hand, when someone
talks to you in team mode, it gives their location in brackets beside the name.

right. let's get on with the console commands, and then you
can boot up your game and notice the difference.
before we go any further, we want to save what we did in the
href="help-config-menu.html" target="_self">menu configuration page. people generally
call their configs after there names, e.g. mine is called "zero.cfg", so you
bring down the console, and type in:
/writeconfig zero.cfg ---> (you obviously put in johnny.cfg or killer.cfg or
whatever).
ok, lets boot through these config commands, i will list them off with a brief
explanation, and any i leave out will be added later on when i remember them. you will
notice that a lot of things you change in the menu setup can also be changed by console
commands.
/r_picmip 4 --> smooths over edges and turns down
detail, can be from 1 to anything.
/cg_fov 100 --> your field of vision, it's personal taste, try from 90-120 and
pick one.
/sensitivity 5 --> your mouse sensitivity i.e. how quickly it responds. usually,
lower sensitivity means better accuracy, but you aim is slower.
/cg_bobroll 0 --> 1 of 5 commands that stops your screen wobbling while
running/walking etc.
/cg_bobpitch 0 --> 1 of 5 commands that stops your screen wobbling while
running/walking etc.
/cg_bobup 0 --> 1 of 5 commands that stops your screen wobbling while
running/walking etc.
/cg_runroll 0 --> 1 of 5 commands that stops your screen wobbling while
running/walking etc.
/cg_runpitch 0 --> 1 of 5 commands that stops your screen wobbling while
running/walking etc.
/cg_railtrailtime 0 --> the length of time your rail trail stays there. i have
it turned off as it's a distraction, default is 400.
/cg_lagometer 1 --> throws up a little box monitoring your connection.
/cg_crosshairhealth 0 --> when this is on 1, your crosshair gets darker as u get
injured. it's bullshit. turn it off.
/cg_drawfps 1 --> shows your fps in the top corner of the screen, handy to check
your pc's performance.
/cg_drawtimer 1 --> shows what time is left in the game.
/cg_gibs 0 --> when set to 0, turns off additional blood'n'shit that will cost
you fps.
/cg_drawgun 1 --> gun on, gun off! gun on, gun off! personal taste again.
/cg_viewsize 100 --> if you have a slower computer or are used to a smaller
screen, turn this down accordingly.
/cg_autoswitch 0 --> if this is set to 1, you change weapons as you step on
them. not a good idea, as a rocket fight can find you holding a shotgun.
/snaps 20 --> a setting for the internet, leave it at around 20, it varies with
different players and their connects.
/cl_maxpackets 30 --> again, dick around with this until you get an optimum
ping.
/cg_drawcrosshairnames 1 --> this is the "identify target" option, and
like i said in the menu options, its better to have it on.
i will add more to this as they come to me, the ones i have
listed here are off the top of my head. either way, it's well enough to get you started.
between the menu configuration page and
this one, you now will notice a massive change in the way your quake 3 looks and feels.
before you try it out, do your /writeconfig {your name}.cfg and it is all saved. it
will feel extremely daunting at first as you try and get used to this setup, but
trust me, if you intend getting even reasonably good, you want to follow most of what's
above here.
alllllllllllllrighty then. you are set up. you now need to
find out where to play, learn how to play like a sneaky bastard, and get to know some
quake people.
