| just recently i have got adsl, this is a good thing in my eyes, although it is costing me loads. previously i was confined to a normal 56k modem, which did not help the online gaming experience.
there are a few reasons why i got adsl, here are a couple of them:
1) because i can.
2) because i was sick of not being able to play in leagues purely because of my ping
i now have a ping to barrysworld of around 40-50 but is stable (unlike isdn-ers), i have also been able to bump up my net settings.
why am i telling you all this? well, because i realise that there are a number of you out there who live more than 4 miles away from your exchange or it hasn't been enabled; so i thought i would tell you what adsl is like. the short answer is wooohaaa, the long answer is a little more complex :-)
my opinon is this: adsl hasn't really changed the way i play quake etc. but it has enhanced my gaming experience. i can now pull down patches, maps, mods, demos etc at extremely fast rates, before i would debate over whether to get a file that was a couple of meg as it would tie up my line for ages. now i don't have to think, i just get it. thus i am improving as a player because i am playing more and also i am able to stay up to date with the latest developments.
additionally, i am paying quite a large amount of money to nildram {isp} each month for the privilege of just competing. in my opinion two things must happen. firstly, the telcos must stop sitting on their collective hands and do something about the relative lack of broadband around the uk. i actually felt honoured to be able to have adsl after hearing the horror stories some of my friends had to go through. surely there is something wrong there?
really the net code in quake needs to be sorted. apparently the next patch will fix a lot of this and i hope is does, i really do, but couldn't this have been sorted out earlier? with id shifting however many millions of copies of q3a it's not as if there are any budget constraints.
there, the end of my first column here on q.ie
