i was just over on xsreality and came across this article written by tomcat who considers himself a professional gamer.

he mentions one thing about a person's reaction time that perhaps makes one player better than the next: how long does it take you to react, from the second you see a guy to the second you actually press fire?

i suggest you have a read and try out this test to determine your reaction time. you might amaze yourself.

i got 0.153666666666664.

I got 0.17, but I do think its a crap test, because you aren't "on edge" as much as you would be in the middle of a game.

That link to the reaction time test seems to have gone down... it might be back up again later, so I'll leave it put.

thats such a pile of insignificant horseshit, the people who read up on these facts and try to exploit them are like soccer players doing bicycle kicks to eachother when a straight forward pass would suffice.

The basis of this test is that it assumes that you cannot miss the target. So it comes down to reaction times; whoever presses the button first.

reaction times are slower when looking for a pattern (player models) as opposed to a change of colour
i read the article and mr. pro-gamer doesnt know what hes talking about.. the screen res/mouse input part is total shite, to give one example (there are many others)
if you want a test of your real world reaction time, follow the procedure below..

The subject holds his/her hand out, extending the thumb and index finger; a second person holds a 12-inch ruler exactly one inch over the subject's extended hand; the ruler is vertical to the outstretched hand, with the numbers reading from the bottom up. When the ruler is dropped, the subject should be able to grasp it between the thumb and index finger as it drops, without changing the position of the hand or body. The distance that the ruler drops through the fingers before it is caught is taken as the reaction time of the subject. If the subject catches the ruler at 6 inch mark, add 1 inch more to the reaction time to include the space between the ruler and the hand at the start of the trial.
you can calculate your reaction time from this as the ruler is accelerating from 0m/s at a constant rate (due to gravity) of about 9.8(m/s)/s, simple leaving cert formula, of course ive forgotten it, someone look it up in your log tables and post it or something

To tell the truth, I never read the full article but I thought the first few paragraphs were the start of an interesting opinion.

I like the sound of that ruler thumb index finger friend reaction test. But what about the socially retarded nerds who have no friends?

I suppose Mammy will have to do.

did that reaction ruler test in science back in school, but it was relativily easy to catch the ruler at the very bottom when it was dropped if i remember correctly

displacement = InitialVelocity(time) + (1/2)(acceleration)(time squared)

s = 0(t) + (1/2)(9.8)(t^2)
t = (s / 4.9)^(1/2)

2p says im wrong.

that sounds right,
supposing it took you 10cm to catch it, then s = 0.1 m,
so s/4.9 = 1/49
and square root of that is 1/7,
so you would have a reaction time of (1/7)secs, or 142ms

eamo your partner didnt do it right then, if you do it properly its practically impossible to catch the end of it, unless youre just guessing when hes going to let go and snapping your fingers shut in advance
