hi all, it's been a while since i've put anything up here, but eric kindly gave me some space here to rant on about whatever i saw fit to post, namely some stories on my global meanderings.
6.42pm sydney
after 8 weeks of intensive travels through hong kong (central / kowloon), thailand (phuket, koh tao, koh pha ngan islands also), malaysia, singapore and currently i've just arrived in oz. thank f*ck. if i have to sleep in one more giant lizard/mosquito/gecko infested shed with a turkish prison hole-in-the-ground-toilet i will go f*cking crazy.
hong kong is beautiful, that much i will give it. the people are amazingly friendly and humble, and the food was delicious. the whole atmosphere there was overwhelmingly, em, blade runner, except without the nutter replicants. it was so hot 24/7, sweating like a lead-laden donkey all the time. check out (pic), (pic) & (pic).
thailand, well. if you like rice and noodles, you're in for a treat. don't be fooled by the tempting broken english of "chikken rice" (sic), for most of the time, it is technically chicken, but it will probably end up being beaks and ankle tendons. or tomato paste covered intestines, as i unfortunately discovered on my first day in malaysia -- this is after i'd scoffed down four tasty skewered poo-pipe snacks. live and learn. they weren't all that bad until i found out. some pics of temples (a wat in thai), grinning monks & gold statues.
one night i went to the famous lumphini thai boxing stadium and saw some of this -- (pic), (pic), (pic). also put up a short movie here.
next up was koh pha ngan, legendary haunt of the full moon party, where people get mashed and spend 12 to 14 hours alternatively dancing and pissing in the sea. not a bad night to be had in all fairness, music was ok, fairly ibiza-esque, and lots of very friendly people. to be honest, i remember better times in the ormonde and the temple of sound in dublin seven or eight years ago, but ahh, i'm probably a bit of an ould lad for this . 4 bottles of red bull extra (supposedly illegal in these parts) and a bottle of samg sung whiskey (reportedly laced with some kind of natural amphetamines) along with other culinary narcotics and i had a reasonbly fun night. however, one thing that stood out in this island was reading the food menu in our guest house. it looked something like this:
- pad thai - 30 baht
- chicken rice - 45 baht
- large bag of weed - 500 baht
- magic mushroom omelette - 400 baht
- ecstasy - 500 baht
well, you get the picture. liberal you might say, however these drugs are still illegal in thailand and will land you at the minimum a 50,000 baht fine (40 baht = 1 euro) and at the worst, a couple of months in a thai jail. you do not want this. your ass will be wider than the m4 and your diet will be that of gentleman's relish and cockroaches.
you have been warned.
the south of thailand was excellent for diving and snorkelling. i swam with giant tortoises, giant 2 metre reef sharks (they don't eat ppl, apparently -- still scared the sh*t out of me) and hundreds of crazy fish.
anyhow, only 1/3 of the way through journey right now -- still fijii, hawaii, vancouver to go, so i'll throw up more pics whenever i can. g'day peeps!
