in a move which has been on the books for some time now, barrysworld, one of europes longest free gaming service, has changed over to a subscription service.

for a mere £2 quid a month (24 per year), you get access to the bw ftp, their bookable servers, their public (or not) servers, email accounts and some other nice stuff. apparently the leagues are still free.

for further info, check out the press release.

Who is actually gonna sign up to bw?
Most of us spend our time complaining about them. I dont think i will be signing up for this "generous offer". Plus im cheap and pay enuff for my isdn line than givin them more fuckin money.

it is only 2 quid a month though
think the major problem with something like this is that our connects to barrysworld are usually shite anyway, but it wouldnt be unreasonable for uk people

It will be interesting to see how many other server providers follow there lead. Thing may get interesting if say jolt where to do the same thing.
Suddenly our humble little servers over here might become might popular (assuming we had any quake servers ).

Well, are the bad connects barrysworld's fault? Most of it seems to be bad routing to the provider barrysworld uses. Perhaps if people are paying for the service, barrysworld will be able to put more pressure on irish isp's to sort out the routing.

Lately I think connects to BW have been improving while conncets to Jolt in leagues has been getting worse.

The routing may be crappy at times, but I can always rely on there being someone on the barrysworld servers to play. Considering I've been playing on them for a few years, I've no problem paying them a subscription.

I'll be paying. Look at where we'd be with out there servers and leagues. Pulling our plum on IRC.

Also with out our support in the present economical climate barrysworld probably will not exist this time Next year. I send you my few cents biff.

They're not asking for donations, they're charging for certain services:

Bookable servers, Public servers, Hosted sites, Public FTP, Email accounts, BarryLogon, Personal Forums.

I wouldn't use any of the above, so I'm not subscribing.

I would use the ftp, but thats still available without subscription, but only at a max of 12k/s or something (which is much more than I'd get anyway).

I've already subscribed. I only really use the public servers from here so it is well worth it for that. The email account and the web page hosting is grand too. Except i have no interest or time to put up a web page yet. As Killy says there isn't much there that we need or will use, but in my opinion 2 beans a month is fuck all. As far as I know if you aren't a subscriber you can't participate in the next league.
