give a million nerds a million copies of knuths algolrithms along with the q1 source code and about seven years later and someone will come up with this:
tenebrae is a modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake. stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world. per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit. these are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new doom game.

Yeah, the textures look like crap.

Thing is, Tenebrae supports 24-bit highres textures! It just happens that the "override" bumpmap/glossmap textures the author provides are minimal conversions of the old 8-bit textures.

With 24-bit textures, Tenebrae should be *amazing*

I've tried it with the dm2/dm4 textures. They work, but there is no bumpmapping and Quark won't let me resave the map with some lights turned on as per Tenebrae's instructions.

I have a demo map and files at http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/atd7/testmap.zip - Put the map into your Tenebrae/maps dir and the tgas in the Tenebrae/override dir.

The floor texture is cheesy but it IS high-res 24-bit, and shows off the capabilities of the engine much better than the author's crap textures.

I'll be updating that file tonight - I have a demo that includes moving colored lights that cast funky shadows.

really nice to see a little of what can be achieved with this engine. Can u make the whole map with 24 bit textures? the more colors the better just to stretch the engine and see what it can do

Quake engine, QMB. It's similiar to tenebrea, but its not as heavy as tenebrea on system resources ie u dont need a beast of a machine. FUH has released a beta containing some bits of QMB, i've just uploaded them yesterday, if you want them get them here:

http://www.frag-shack.org/fuhquake-qmb.zip (fuhquake QMB)

and

http://www.frag-shack.org/qmb-v1[1].14.zip (QMB Engine)

Enjoy

actually fuhquake is 32-bit textures. 24-bit for rgb, 8-bit for alpha, hence 32-bit color texture.
