bigfoot's review is up as usual over on quakenation. take a look here.

i think his comment's on nd requesting a postponement was a little unfair, seeing as he knows well how bad the connections have always been from ireland.

quote:
despite having nice 50 ping connects for once the nd lads requested a postpone with ek due to "connection problems", ek relunctantly agreed which i personally thought was a mistake but there ya go.

aside from that we are in a bad situation in the group and need to make the best of the remaining games to avoid relegation. hence we only want to play when the connection is at its best. why should we play with a crap connection? what does that prove? who is the better team or who has the better connection? having a 50 ping in quake 3 means nothing, the ping time can remain constant with spikes and lags not being reflected in the ping displayed. anyone who has ever tried to play quake 3 online is aware of this. ek also know of our strife (as we play them about 3 times a week) and were very decent to give us a postepone. (thanks guys!)

nd face mvc another formidable opponent this week so we are keen to play when the conditions are right.

fh played two great games this week versus brother, to take them away from the relegation zone. well done lads! keep it up! they face wz this week on tuesday at 9pm. gl n8s.

You say you had connection problems, if you were getting packetloss like you suggest then your pings would have spiked - i didn't see this from GTV.

I was getting disconnect symbol and the 'connection interrupted' writing on my screen, yet absolutely no change in ping. What frustrates me is people who say we have no problem because our ping is solid. I remember playing QW with a solid 40 ping and registering 30 something pl, timetravelling all over the place. Zero's office has always been like this since last season, we just play on it without complaining, however the other night was simply too shit coupled with our usual luck that the other office was fucked too. One day they'll decide to put broadband into this country and there'll be no more of this shit.

The reason you don't see spikes in the ping when there is packet loss is because the ping packets are given a higher priority than other packets by the router. This allows them to be bumped up to the top of the packet queue on the router when they are received by it.

The only time you WILL see the ping spike is if the router itself is heavily overloaded, IE experiencing buffer overflows... THEN you will see players 999'ing and huge spikes in the ping.

Also, as far as I know Quake 3 does a ping say every 2/3 seconds, so it is possible for a spike in Packet loss to occur between pings, and therefore a player can experience packet loss without it being reflected in the ping time.

What you said annoys me because you already know that the Quake3 network code is pretty crap, and you know historically we have ALWAYS had problems with our connections from Ireland. And yet you inferred that we should have and could have played. We have no reason to bullshit. If we could have played we would have. I don't think there is any other team in the whole league that have to go though as much strife just to get a game. Zero has to go into his office in the university and bring in Bunny and Gman, and pray that everyone has gone home so that Bunny can play. I have to come into my office and hope that there are no dickheads using kazaa or downloading movies on the one 2MBit connection that supplies 84 offices. I think practically every other player in the league sits on their ISDN, DSL or cable at their home, where they are used to the solid connection they get everytime they hop on and are free to play every night of the week for hours on end. We are lucky to get more than 6 games of quake 3 a week, 2 of them being the actual league games. So now you know that for the amount of hassle involved in playing, the last thing we want to do is request a PP.

Traditionally the players in nD have bent over backwards just to participate in the Barrysworld league, and we will continue to do so because we love it so much and it is a great league.

The last thing I have to say is please rememeber, things aren't always as they seem in Quake 3.

ive donated to quake.ie!

'ISDN' and 'solid connection' do not belong in the same sentence.

Maybe 'solid' isn't the right word, but 'consistent' may be better. Besides I am sure ISDN in london is 10 times better than ISDN in Ireland.

However ISDN is consistent in ireland AND UK and everywhere else. Consistently shite. (for Q3)
