this must be something quake
players are interested in so i'll give some info on it here. eircom have finally
made a move on dsl, publically announcing a package, and a date... since it's
the only available dsl package in ireland at the moment it's a total rip off
when compared to other european countries. also there are rumours of a "cap"
being put on the service... which coupled with the high price would make it
even more unattractive.

i steam solo

the product has both a usb port or ethernet option

speeds are up to 512kbps downstream/128kbps upstream

connection fee is 125 (ir£98.45) - monthly fee is 99 (ir£77.97).

additional equipment required: adsl usb modem 145 (ir£114.20) or adsl ethernet
modem 200 (ir£157.51)

i stream plus

speeds are up to 1mbps downstream/256kbps upstream

connection fee is 125 (ir£98.45) - monthly fee is 165 (ir£129.95).

they're 34 exchanges flagged
for upgrading throughout dublin for dsl. after talking to an eircom customer
rep i was told that shortly after launch, and in the proceeding weeks all 34
exchanges will be upgraded.

ther'll be a 15 day wait
from ordering to installation (i was told the same delays that accompanied isdn
installation will not be present with adsl installation), after a phone line
test to verify your line is within the nesessary distance from telephone exchange.
they'll be accepting pre-orders from about next week onwards and say they'll
start installing lines in peoples houses on the 28th of september.

I just got ADSL today, and I live in Tenerife (Canary Islands). Here we've had DSL for months - and it's way cheaper:
- Free installation and no connection fee
- about 150 pounds for the ethernet router
- about 30 pounds a month for 24 hour flatrate with NO cap
(This is for the 256 kbps version, btw)
Too bad I'll have to be heading back to Ireland soon...

If the regulator deems Eircom's behaviour dissatisfactory, she has some power to "remedy the situation. The only way to bring about more power for the ODTR is through legislation, which would lead to more legal wrangling from Eircom."

exactly, eircom will obstruct and stall for as long as they can. The telecom regulator DOESNT have the power to remedy the situation... in Austrailia for instance the regulator there can charge up to £10mper day in fines....

Once again, you're basing an argument on rash assumptions lightly sprinkled with fiction. With regards the local loop, the regulator can actually imposed unlimited fines. A reasonable bit of product costing by Eircom will allow them to make provision for this and incorporate this provision in the product price.

Eircom will obstruct and stall for as long as they can. Thats human nature, you have something thats working out quite well
for you and you will do everything in your power to keep it. Perhaps you would like Alfie Kane to come out of Stephen's Green
waving a white flag, surrender the local loop and then go to his AGM to face some even more irate shareholders and an
even more condescending senator speaking from the pocket of Tony O'Reilly?

Also, I'm sure our Antipodean chums would prefer if you used the standard spelling of "Australia".

thats a load of shit talk. Interesting, but shit all the same.

Tony O Reilly or Alfie Kane aint gonna help me get a 20 ping to uk servers, so it comes back to very simply the offer that Eircom has produced, ie. It does not suit the more hardcore gamer. Im not sure it would even suit the regular net user.

Isdn is your only man in Ireland.

i all honesty the only thing is this country that would give you a nice ping other than ISDN is leased lines and they aint exactly cheap, unless you open a cybercafe in your bedroom

regarding mindphuks suggestion that isdn bandwidth needs to be increased.
that cant happen mate, most isdn can do is 128k, 2 channels of 64k bonded together.
but no telecom company will give cheaper 128k access when they can charge the price of 2 phone calls for it now.

When lending a hand with the cpl in holland i was talking to one of the admins, a german lad by the name of spetzi i think, and we was saying that flat rate isdn 64k was 80dm a month in germany. also that 384k adsl was 60dm a month, even cheaper than isdn.

If every gamer in ireland had flat rate 128k isdn for less then 30 quid a month (calls included), they would be chuffed!

would own... atm my phone bills are insane... i could have 3 DSL lines in UK for the amount i'm paying

You can multilink isdn up to 1024k or so np but you need like 20 isdn lines or so to do it and it'd cost 20 times the phone call too, and your pings would probably turn out worse than just using 128k anyway .

the price pretty much lives up to the rumours floating around for the last week or so. As there are 3 ppl in my house I'll most likely be getting it ... unless there is a ridiculous download limit.

gaming pings will not be as good as ASDL in most countries... u see what PHB gets, only 70 to irish servers, 90 to english

that sounds fkin awful illkillya, especially considering you can ping 40/50 in dos to servers in amsterdam and eng on eircom net isp.... and they can't even give that preformance with a supposedly superior service.

Will and IS the only feasable gaming connectivity in ireland. Its reasonably priced, its reasonably quick to get installed and it is relieable.

What they need to do is give higher bandwidth (256k, 512k) isdn and make it flatrate. DSL is just not going to work in the fashion we, as gamers, need it to work.

why eircom can't get off their cake holes and fix DSL for gaming.

They had a choice between a high quality low latency service or a below par quality one... and they choose the low quality one... because know they can get away with it. There's absolutely no reason why we can't have affordable low pinging dsl in Dublin tommorrow. But you're right MP, as far as Ireland in general is concerned... ISDN is all we got, outside of the main cities.s'fuctup

Most ppl are reacting in an incredibly naive manner about this. The price could hardly have been unexpected. Eircom are a company, they make profits, they are not a charity. The way they price ADSL s what they see as low enough to generate demand while also making what they deem a reasonable profit.
They also have no obligation to gear it towards gaming and to think so is just plain ignorance.
