heard this on jo duffy today. a blind woman rang in to say that eircom offer a service to blind people where they get a pin number for using when ringing directory enquires so they wont be charged for the call "but" (and its a doozey of a but) they won't connect the call for them, like they normally do, therefore rendering the service useless as the blind person is unable to write the number down and dial it for themselves.

if that doesn't sum eircon up i don't know what does

Had a great one today, first off never try and cancel any broadband, either eicom or esatBT (or sorry I mean BTIreland), both seem arseholes to me.

Phoned 1901 around 7, finally got to an operator. He stated that the esatBT broadband hadnt been canceled. I said it actually had 2 days ago, I had a cancelation number and everything, even had been onto eircom wholesale to confirm it. Then he said, it maybe the system, we dont use the live system after 6, we use an archived one, so anything changed within the last 2 days will not show up.

Now what the fuck does that mean? So after 6pm they work off a 3 day old backup? that just sounds like such a load of arse.

hating eircom...

I have just spent about 20 minutes on hold and talking to eircom representatives struggling to place an order - PLACE AND ORDER!! - for business broadband. On the first call I was dropped after about 3 minutes. On the second call I got through to someone in Broadband sales and he patched me through to someones voicemail!! On the third attempt, after a further 4 mins of waiting, I finally got through to someone to find that I cannot get broadband - in the Foxrock area, even though I just had a new line installed (apparantly, the technicians had to drag new copper). The person I spoke with went to get more info for me and then, without warning, I was transferred on to someone else and had to start the broadband ordering process all over again. This lady said she would patch me through to Customer Care and transferred me. I sat waiting for someone to answer the phone in Cust Care for about 4 mins (this is Cust Care!!) before being told that you couldn't take my call. I was offered the alternative of faxing or emailing you with my query.

This is not the first time I have encountered this level of amaturish, clumsy, third world, appalling service from Eircom. There is no point in installing expensive call handling erquipment if you don't intend to provide the support around them. Just about every time I cal your organisation I have to wait for extended periods of time to get service and then the service is rarely satisfactory and generrally appalling. You clearly do not have your customers interest at heart and are simply exploiting your position as a monopoly . I just went to a lot of effort to have an eircom phone line installed into my house and now find that I can't use it for broarband. This now renders this line useless to my mind.

I have been a customer of Eircom for the last 20 odd years. Believe me, as soon as I can get an alternative supplier for voice and data services I will be gone. Why should I spend my money on a service and company that clearly has no interest in it's customers.

I recently had some monkeys block my drive way and start drilling holes in front of my house. Turns out they were subcontracting for Eircom. A neighbour had registered a line fault and they were in to put a new line in.
Now, although I have no issues in principal with the response to the call my neighbour submitted, I do have an issue with the anxiety and stress levels caused by having workmen spontaneously turning up and blocking my drive without prior warning-it is very bad manners.
I called many different numbers to get hold of someone in Eircom to take notice of my plight, only to be eventually promised a call back that never happened. I even called the subcontractors head office and promised to call me back and didn't.
Eventually I got hold of a surly woman in Eircom who actually told me that she would not register my complaint as the spot they were digging up (infront of my house and drive-way) was public property, and if I had an issue I should take it up with the local authority.
By this time I had moved my car over the spot being dug up to stop the work. After this I was threatened with a call to the Guards by the subcontractors. I said they should call them but the Mrs was too stressed and asked me to back down and move the car, so I did - reluctantly.

The whole experience has left me with a profoundly low opinion of Eircom and their apparent pathelogical indifference to their customers - the people paying their wages. It's a shame the current government is in permanent colusion with these big businesses and preventing genuine competition as I'd switch in a second.

Putting the things in perspective, I do believe that Ireland is a very modern and competitive country. The problem is the wretched heritage of the monolithic state of the past.

Politicians did reforms up to a stage where the country became a serious player at the world economy and money started to pump in. That done, what better than keeping the arrangements of its statist past, with its cosy business enviroment? Good for some priviledged groups, good for the politicians.

On the ESB webpage one can read on the faq:
Can I get a networks service from another company?
No, ESB Networks is a natural monopoly.

No wonder a technician from ESB earns 80.000 euro on average!

Other sectors such as the banking system, public transport and telecomunications are clearly a joke. My girlfriend was recently denied to open a bank account on BOI on the grounds that she did not live on the area of the branch.

Similarly, bus stops packed with people are just a hassle to Dublin bus: any private business would be jumping for joy, but for them is just DoS: wait for the next one or come earlier tomorrow. Any wonder that this happens? Grant some business monopolies and special protection and they will treat costumers as they like, which usually is: like rubbish.

The solution for this country is very simple: deregulation, privatization, competition. I think this is inevitable by now, but the country stalls now and then. Some politicians are trying to sell the idea of a 'social pact', which is just a rebranding of the failure collectivism from the the past, and I sincerelly hope that the voters will not be tricked by that.
