seeing as Legacy ended up at 25 euro for 12 hours...

this is far cheaper than the likes of some other LANs.

besides a fiver is more than acceptable. he has no debts llike us for the hall etc tho

Let me point out a few truths that you may or may not be aware of.

1: The Darkside LAN that is happening on June 28th is going to be a fun LAN where the emphasis is on fun. That is why there won't be many competitions. At no point was the decision made on our part to have NO competition. You have only ever attended Darkside V which was a specifically competition oriented LAN, so it is very obvious that you have no idea what any of the other LANs were like. Ask around, and I am sure you will hear that the previous LANs were quite successful and fun without having the focus on competitions.

2: Your insinuation that I am running Darkside VI in such a way in order to repay debts for previous failed Darkside LANs is bordering on slander, so I would request that you amend your comment and apologise unreservedly. Darkside LANs have NEVER been a failure. How I run my LAN is my business, as is the case for how you run yours. For your information, I may have lost money on megaLAN, but I also happen to OWN all the servers, switches and power distribution that I use at megalan and darkside. Do you honestly think that I can afford to pay for all this kit and then charge €20 entry to the LAN ? The Darkside LAN is self funding - I make no profit from it, in fact I make a loss, but I am happy to take a hit on someting I enjoy. Again, if you ask around you will find that the Darkside LANs fell in cost for DS V. In this day in Ireland, how many things can you name that actually reduced in price by 17% over the past year ?

I awate your comments with interest

You're too right Richard.
Some people seem to have the impression that LANs should be CPL or EuroCup Finals-style things where everything is perfectly setup and there are 42" plasma screens going for 3rd place in the Yu-Gi-Oh knockouts.
From my own experience of running and organising GalwayLANs we've always tried to concentrate of having a good weekend with plenty of gaming and messing about.
We've had some sort of competition at everyl lan, sometimes without prizes at all and more often then not some token reward to accompany the respect of your peers (Padré Pio relic circa GL1-MollyLAN).
It takes a bloody awful amount of time, organisation and money to build things from scratch up to the standard of Darkside and you don't really seem to understand that.
We've tried to run cheap lans (due to the cost for people traveling with accomodation etc.) and just about all the money we've raised has been spent on the venue and 2 switches.
Who's supplying your equipment? Do you have dedicated server boxen? If the Church Hall were ever to fall through, do you have a backup venue? If you were to have a weekend-long LAN, what would be the security situation? Are you going to pay the Church's ESB bill?
I just hope B0rkstock2 is as good as you're saying marclar. And if it is, fairplay. Prehaps you could help the rest of us how we can improve our lans and still only charge 20?

you seem to 4get something else Marclar. Apart from the reputation of a LAN, the reputation of the person running it goes a long way to pulling in a crowd. I went to Legacy having never met Ken b4 or evne talked to him on irc but i was informed he was a reliable sort of guy. When all people see of you is carrying on like this putting down every1 else youre not going to get anywhere.

Megalan didn't actually make a loss, we invested in alot of the equipment that went towards running the lan. Having a proper setup for a big lan doesn't come cheap. The backbone switch we had at megalan retails for well over 4g's an thats without even putting a card in it. For those unsure the cards are the faste ports etc. So if people are charging for lans its so that they can fund the event and also buy equipment to run future events. You don't think dell poweredge's grow on tree's either do you? Seriously bad form trying to bad mouth people. An again on megalan. I was brought on board fully during the event an i'm still fronting up my end of the money for the equipment no questions asked as I see it as an investment. Thats all I'm going to say. Ronin

Previous failed ones??? As far as we are concerned any Darkside LAN's that have taking place have been a success from the first Darkside's right up to the present.A lot of time and efford have gone into making darkside what it is and yet you seem to be trying to sully our name, Why? have we done something to piss you off in some way?. I think you owe Darkside or more to the point you owe Richard an apology and a public one at that.

/me apologises profusely.

BUT to be honest i was responding to moaning and bitching about the price. We do our best to have a lowish price, and i am sorry that i cam across the wrong way about darkside. I was not suggesting that darkside was a profiteering lan, but i wondered where the money was going seeing as there will be no prizes. €25x60=€1000, meaning an outcome of, lets say, 800 euro. i was also unaware that all of the servers had not been paid for?

You could have responded to the bitching and moaning quite sufficiently without mentioning the Darkside LAN. Why were you wondering where the money was going - quite frankly, it has absolutely nothing to do with you, and is none of your f***in' business. Also, where did you learn your maths, I hope you aren't doing any exams this year, coz running a 70 seater LAN and having costs of only €200 is just nonsensical. The table rental alone is nearly double that figure. I am disappointed in you Jeff, as I had expected a more mature attitude from you, and I see that you still have not edited your original post as I had requested. Yeah, I'm an admin here, and I could have edited it myself, but I thought I would give you the chance to do the decent thing yourself. What a bad judge of character I must be :(
