| Heya guys,
First and foremost.. thank you all coming.
Yes. There were a few things to sort out alright but for a first LAN organised by DIT it went really well.
The competitions I know lacked advertising. The fact that we didn’t know what prizes exactly we had till the Friday night before the LAN didn’t really help (and yes I know you can argue the point that we could have had at least a 2 set etc etc)
The prizes we gave out were,
17” TFT screen (Kindly donated by Chris Gilliam from Arqiva)
3 Litre bottle of Vodka (Kindly donated by Mammy Maher)
Wireless Media Station (Donated by www.marxcomputers.ie)
Luminous Keyboard
Luminous Mouse pas
Sharkoon Case carrier
Remote control cars
Quake 4
The Path of Neo
Cake of 100 cdrs
2 x Creative Speaker Systems
And a few bits more
Yes networking issues,
1. someone let in a NEW worm into the network to which AVG and Mcafee didn’t pick up. My desktop was running Mcafee and got infected, My laptop running Norton caught it. The worm was basically attacking with DOS attacks which caused some lag on our servers but nothing crucial to our network.
2. DHCP. I swear to god if I find the f*cker who ran another…….. Yes unavoidable, the lease time should have been set longer on our server but again should have been ok if someone else didn’t run one. Quickly fixed with static IP’s
What I would recommend for other lan organisers (ie what we learned)
DHCP. Make your lease times for longer than the event. If you don’t and find there is someone else running a DHCP server this is what you do! Get the MAC address of the server issuing out IP’s and bring your network back up with static IP’s. Find the MAC associated with what computer. Get a blunt metal object and apply to 0wn3r!
Examine. Each PC that walks into the LAN, sit down and check their PC for the latest ANTI-VIRUS dats and windows update. If not make sure they update. I think the worm that went around our network was fairly new so couldn’t have been avoided.
Planning. Most lan organisers know that planning can be quite hard. Competitions were hazy I know but we now know for the next time. And I know there was a lot of waiting time between comps, suggestion practice / leeching?
Patches & MODs. State what patches you will be running 3 days before the event for each game that you will be playing. Stick to your guns ie.. if someone else wants another patch / mod installed don’t bother!
Heating. Make sure you gage the heat right. Too much heat make gamers fall asleep
Ordering. Outside companies who you rely on eg Cater Hire to be there a half an hour before the time you need it there. For a while I though we were without tables and chairs!
I wish to thank the following people. Chris Gilliam for the electrical rig (man this guy is efficient!), Philip Bannon for organising Competitions and Game servers.
Our team, Brian “sparky” Doyle, Simon “Oriain” Ryan, Laura “Kat” Dooly, Yuvraj “UV” Parihar, Peter “McDuck” Monaghan, Sandi ”BiBi” Ngai, Keith “Kdouglas” Douglas. Every single one of them pulled their weight and support, from crimping 160+ (2.7km) cables and all the electrical work.
Special thanks TCD Netsoc, GCD Netsoc(establishing), ITT Netsoc, KillerKen, Fiona Whelan, Lea, Mammy Maher (for feeding and looking after the troops) and the guy with the broken leg at LavaLAN (sorry I didn’t get your name)
www.Marxcomputers.ie for the prize and 10% off stall they had at the event! BioHazrd for the advice and support!
No thanks goes to DCU gaming society who originally wanted in on this event, went silent and sent us a rather nasty email stating they were not going to participate.
Many thanks to the people stating how hard it is to plan an event like this. A lot of work, planning, time and effort went into this event.
Ill finish up by saying how proud I am of the team for all of their work. Thank you for all the colleges who helped and attended.
See you at the next DIT Lan event.
Regards
Fester
