Still 15 or so places so room for more people if they want to come. No problem about only being around the Sunday.

The competition timetable is now posted on the LAN details. Im putting half on each day in case some of you can only make one of the days.

Well run a dedicated server for each tourney match (my shuttle will be at the top doing its thing)

Hi All,

Was at the lan Saturday from about 11 to 11.30pm had to leave cause i had other commitments on the Sunday, Have to say apart from the long walk with gear to the computing lab where it was on, the computing lab was very nice for a lan, right height desks comfy chairs lots of room, Rapid network, If possible closer to the door or get that Side door on the B-Block opened,

I was kinda dissapointed at the start when battlefield 2 was being played online as I dont have a valid serial i couldnt play, if i had known I could have poped in the game on the way in, for most of the day BF2 was played which got a bit long in the tooth,

The UT competition was mad! 1 hour all in Death match on plunge great map guys had a variety of variables low grav, sniping etc so it was a good competition, bit long my hand is still recovering, from holding down the shield gun button for an Hour :-) hope i didnt tick too many off, I can 3Rd and came away with a nice PS2 game Thanks Lads!!!

So in all Fair play to the lads for setting it up, they were very accomodating with any problems you had through out the day and held competitions back for people to get stuff ready, My only 2 flaws with it, 1st the long walk 2nd the lack of variety of games

Hope ye have another one soon!

Great LAN.

I would agree with the Voodoo with the long distance we had to walk with all our gear, and the huge amount of BF2 that was being played the LAN was a bit annoying.

The hour long UT2004 comp wasw crazy! About 15 people played in it and I beleive that everyone had a good time. I have to say great job Morph on the amazing score!
I came first by a very slim margin but since I unfortunally dont own a x-box or PS2 all I got was dinner on the house. Second prize was a x-box game which Morph won and Voodoo won a PS2 game.

The Counter Strike: Source Comp was a bit lacking on players with only 2 teams of 4, but was still great fun. Overall a good LAN.

Hi guys,

Fisrtly I want to thank all of you that made it to the lan - without you none of this would have been possible.

The lab and internet connection really rocked and a big thank you to TiG for the BF2 challenge match on Saturday - was nice to see a virtual clan presence.

BF2 seemed to be the game of the LAN with a lot of people playing it. Next time well aim to balance things out a bit more though and have more variety played.

Were already taking suggestions for our next LAN, hopfully early in the next semester in UL. If you have comments please dont hestitate to drop us a message. Were eager to scale up the SkyLAN and have more games and people involved so help us make it the LAN you want it to be.

Again thank you and ggs all. Was a pleasure to have you. :salute:

Sorry to the ppl who hosted this , but it had to be the worst lan ever ,

+ = Good room, good chairs, lots of desktop space
- = One hell of a walk to get to the room, NO SERVER, No one seemed to be in charge, no organisation...etc
- = No food or drink in the room!!!

at one stage there was at least 25-30 ppl in the room and the most that was playing any game was 10.....
At the lans I usually attend there are 16-18ppl , and we can get more ppl playing.
No Server , How can u host a lan with no server, its pointless , if this had been said before hand we would have provided one.

I believe there was a no leeching rule ...so to Paul that means u stay off ppls systems , I had to disconnet u 3-4 times while we were playing games u were coping stuff, Not very gamer of u.

The Tournaments , We were to there was as CS tournament , now I hate CS with a passion, Bluedrax , Yank and even Polar-ice can vouch for this but i still joined in on the server 8 f**kin ppl .................ye took €20 off of us for that , 8 ppl who normally go to the lans we attend went to this hopin to get a 20 a side BF2 or CS-source ,

If ye are going to do this again dont just provide the room. I have been at other lans Like Shannonlan and other UL lans , this by far was the worst, I hope the guys collecting the €20 didnt just pocket it

Have to agree with Joe on this one. A lan needs to be better organized. It was clear who the experienced LAN goers were at this LAN. Within 30 minutes of arriving (and PAYING) the elite 8 had a game of BF2 going full force.

As no one seemed to be organizing anything, we attempted to invite EVERYONE to play on one of our servers (posting the info to the board, paying personal visits to each gamers machine, Bluedrax helped everyone patch). In a short amount of time we had the largest presence for any game being played, and this lasted succesfully for hours. Many who played with us had never played bf2 before and some had just bought the game that day. This was the only time a real LAN-spirit entered the fray...

When a few "gamers" complained they couldnt play with us becasue they only had hacked versions, we didnt belittle them...we actually offered to stop playing online to give them a chance to play as well.

Later, when it was clear some other people wanted to get a different game started, we happily joined the CS Source game on offer, although some in our group could not play as they didnt have the game. No one offered to help them get sorted, not very gamer of you.

I believe the funniest moment I found was that the "organisers" were finally getting around to getting a game/compettition organized at 20 past 8 - a full 10 hours after the LAN started. Why someone didnt hold a competition for the game that was most popular at the LAN, the one I and at least 8 others paid 20 euro for I cant understand.

I have been to better LANs hosted in cowsheds balancing my keyboard on the back of a lawnmower. You can have all the fancy chairs and desks you want, but you need better social skills to get a group together gaming.

Learn something from this disaster of a LAN (we too had disasters when we started out, and we were never too proud to call them disasters) We could have brought 10 more experienced players with us - but it will be very difficult to convince them to come next time.

Next time:
1. Bring a server, if you havent got one ask. (Bluedrax)
2. A society ought to have spares (theres always one guy who swears his nic was working this morning)
3. Make it clear players need to bring Games (an internet connection like that should NOT be wasted)
4. LEECHing at certain times only... this pissed many an experienced gamer off - you could have had tons if you ASKED
5. SPEAK UP - meet people, say hello, and possibly thank you when an elder helps you out.

Lads,

Have to aggree with Joeface and Yank...

Some of yee are complaining about all of us playing BF2most of the day....well as yank stated if we hadnt started a fecking game we would have still been sitting there @ 8pm @ night talking about gigabytes, and megabytes ...and mines is bigger than yours etc etc

Honestly ...Im pissed that i had to pay twenty euros for possibley the worst lan "EVER" attended OMFG!!!

/Me looks for Paul o Conner ..

While trying to host a server as there was none provided...I had to almost quit the server due to lag...because some one was leeching from my divx movies folders and tv shows ...not very smart

Again as stated earlier by Joeface and Yank .. if people wanted to leech we could have taken a break our passed around USB hd drives so that everyone could have taken advantage of this.

I rember attending lans in ul before run my Lord Khan....when the first battlefield 1942 came out....they ranked in the best lans ever!!!!!! they were organised and at any given time there was @ least 30 people playing in a game.

/END OF RANT

Dazza aka tsunami

Now lads....i hope that there will be more lans to come in the future...but before there organised please take note of the concerns.

On a side note... Joeface and Mr Timewalk host lans in there own gaffs once every two months with around twenty people attending ....and Bluedrax providing the server and Tech Knowledge and these are far more enjoyable and are FREE

Read the initial decription of the Lan guys. You were all told to bring your own games.

There was also a tournament schedule posted - the UT one was very good, the CS one took a while to start (basically we were trying to get enough people to make in worth while - see the next point).
If yere pissed off about the length of time taken to set up the tournaments or the number of people playing them blame the people who spent the entire Lan using the net connection generously provided by the University to play BF2 online. Its a Lan guys, ye can do that at home ffs.
Also if you dont want to suffer leeching DISABLE YOUR SHARES!. People will leech if theres obviously stuff open.
As for a server, we (those of us one the Gsoc side) had versions of all the games (bar BF2) along with all the patches required (kudos to Jim Foley aka [UWb]Cheese) and we tried to get things going but people insisted on playing BF2 when a lot of people didnt have a copy or couldnt play it ( I did but I can play that at home) - or wouldnt use a different version of games from their own to allow everyone to get in on the action.

Overall it was a good Lan going on its initial promises. Some recommendations for the future SkyLan guys -
the server idea is good.
Insist people use common versions of games and patches.
Internet connection for patching etc only.

Well Just in responce to KerranJast

Not once did we get asked to play in any tournament ...or to join any other games

The only time we were approached was when some one was looking for EUROS

If you go to a lan..you expect to be told...there is a server running GAME X can everyone please join in.

Instead we sat around like eejits for half an hour before starting the BF2 online as it was clear that no one else was going to start anything.

hold on a sec ,
First of all only 15ppl took part in the UT event ...crap there was way more than that there. 8 ppl were playing CS-source again Crap. if it was done properly every body should have been playin the same game at the same time. At one stage we managed to 10-12ppl play BF2, 4 other ppl were playing 1942, 2 guys were play UT on there own , I mean WTF, thats why we went playin online , Battlefield any version of it is shite with out decent numbers. As for having different versions, as for BF2 it was on the list of games ,r every body knew it should have been up todate.
And have cracked versions of a game is just a stupid excuse, If asked for we had a version of CS that everone could have used, but there server that was started was for the legal copy.
and why wasnt the guy giving the IT support to everyone ie Bluedrax not givin his money back , those in charge did little to help any one .

sorry kerran, but get a clue.

"If yere pissed off about the length of time taken to set up the tournaments or the number of people playing them blame the people who spent the entire Lan using the net connection generously provided by the University to play BF2 online. Its a Lan guys, ye can do that at home ffs."

IT IS A LAN - do you know what that means?? how are you going to blame our group for why it took your group so LONG to get organized??? because we were using the net?? that makes no sense. AS dazza pointed out - the lan organizers group got NOTHING going saturday morning - WE DID.

Read my post - we did go around to every single gamer and help them to get correct patches needed. And yes we did use the interent connection to play, as we needed more people and WE BOUGHT THE GAME! As I said, we stopped playing online to help out those to cheap to buy a great game like bf2 (i assume those same people had to spend an hour or more copying any other game played).

LEECHING is a privlege not a right...when someone is gaming you dont leech em. this is a rule well known to anyone that plays at UL lans...and is usually stated at the start when you are talking about pizza discounts. your attitude is exactly why that lan failed.

As i said in my post, LEARN from you mistakes, dont pretend it was well run.

Why is the internet connection to be used for patching only? thats gay.

I guess we have some issues in common - the UT tournament should have been run on UT GOTY edition not UT2004 because it took an age for people to get that (5 odd gigs of it) off emus server. We were the 4 guys playing BF1942 because one guy had no copy of BF2 and anothers PC was good enough for it. The BF2 tournament was scheduled for Sunday as was Call of Duty but there werent enough numbers and when a casual came of Call of Duty was suggested, the answer back was BF2. Sorry Dazza if you werent asked. Our corner werent running the Lan but we did try to get some games going. I suppose one good thing to do for the next lan is when people arrive to get a survey of what their machines are capable of and what games they want to play (or do this on here as a poll during signup). Its inevitable that in a Lan older versions of games are going to have to be used to get everyone playing but some people just dont want to take 2 mins to install say CS 1.5 (or 1.6), UT GOTY or BF1942. A poll of machines/games would sort this IMO.

Agreed but you have to understand that people are going to do it anyway. Human nature.

At any LAN theres going to be a lot of people who cant afford to keep up with the latest and greatest games and hardware. It just good LAN ettique to try and reach a common audience. I had BF2 but I wanted to get everyone in on the action.

OMFG

We know its human nature ....we also know that u dont leech of someones machine while he is gaming least of all while he is hosting

and the proposed games were listed when the lan was anounced ...if they didnt have the games they had plenty of time add ones they did. When u arrive at the lan is not the time.

Hope it works better for ye next time,ye def have the room to host it and the setup, all ye need know is the ppl to run it
