The LAN wasnt THAT diabolical.

The main problem was the whole BF2 thing as when I arrived, about 12ish on Saturday, there was already a game going on and it went on for another 4-5 hours, which kinda left about 5 people out in the cold as we couldnt play BF2,and not because we are too "cheap" to buy it either, but because our computers arent specced to the max. However, my computer for one could handle everything else but wasnt given the opportunity to due to the majority being against playing anything other than BF2.

And for those complaining about there only being 8 or 9 people on CS-Source later in the evening, why not look to the hoard of people on the left side of the room that left as soon as that said BF2 game ended. They lost complete and utter interest once we were playing a "lesser" game.

I dont know about the rest of ye, but I had a good laugh at the LAN. Stayed until about 6am in the morning but as KerranJast said, if you want to get everyone involved, theres no point playing games like BF2 that require the best of the best in machines, because if your like me, and you cant afford the €2000 or more it would take to spruce up your maachine, then BF1942, CoD and CS:Source do the trick just fine.

And actually come to think of it, who are ye guys who are saying they were going around "helping" and "saying hello" because I never heard from any of ye

ha yeah whatver, my computer is perfect in every way except the graphics card mate, and that CANt be upgraded due to the circumstances with the motherboard. What Im trying to say is that not everybody has the cash or inclination to spend time having the biggest and maddest machine with like 2GB of RAM and the latest equpiment, we are students afterall, and by a minority of people being too headstrong to accept that, is what really lessened the LAN, not anything else.

Now if i had a machine that couldnt play the games that are meant to be played ..i wouldnt waste my time by turning up.

after all we didnt play anything that wasnt on the list .. and the reason why most people left after BF2 was because they prob had other commitments ...speaking for myself I could only make the lan for one day...but i still gladly payed the twenty euros thinking it would be worth it

All that can be said is the location was great and fair play to the lads.. for getting a nice lab ..

I think with some better planning it the next lan can be much better... but if your going start bitching that your system cant play certain games .. and we dont all have E2000 worth of systems... thats total B0LLOCKS

it was a minority of people who didnt have decent machines...

Like i mean if you own a lada your not going to enter a race against forumla one cars and start bitching cos there quicker than you ...

Granted alot of people are students....but DONT post games to be played that your machine wont play.

of the ppl on the "LEFT SIDE OF THE ROOM" of which there were only ever 7 , 4 were playing CS-Source , they were , Bluedrax,Yank, Joeface, An_Capail_Mor, the only other ppl i remeber play were PurpleIce ( died by his hand lots ) and 2 other guys. we were the first ppl on the CS server .

Ye keep missing the point we are trying to make.

No one Took charge .
The only time any body who arranged this Lan appear was for there money
To anounce that a CS-soucre comp was going to start at 7 which it didnt
and To anounce that someppl were drinking coke

Less of the attitude Darren. It makes you look childish. Bring all the fancy games you want, just dont expect everyone at a LAN to have chucked a small fortune into their rig. A bit of respect goes both ways.

There were 7 people entered into the CS:S tourney. The rest I presume were playing BF2 -> left side of room (team1) [UWb]KerranJast, [UWb]Zilog_Jones, [UWb]Daxis_Marr, [UWb]Herr_Cron. (team2) PolarIce, Shoot_the_Moon(sp?) and 1 other guy. El Wizo joined late up to team2.

SergeantHorse it had nothing to do with just one game , on any game we played, there were never more than 10 players..... Your the one that needs a reality check ,

I if ye couldnt play the proposed games ye had 3 bloody weeks to propose alternates
all of us would have played 1942 and any of its mods is DC.Or any other game sugested

If u had a problem ...we did hear you voice it at the lan,Did u offer to host a game for everyone no , Dazza ran server , Did u offer to help everyone get patched up no Bluedrax did .. so student boy a little respect to them would go along way.....

Why do I think that joeface has redhair?

anyway, EG010 we would have loved that close to the front at the left of the main door.
but I will agreed with the lads (yank, dazza) it was a long walk up and most of it was online servers.

like it looked like there was no admins you should be sitting at the front davisc had to walk around and and take payments €20 we got stiffed on that.

everybody was online instead of playing at a lan party.

1. Hard to find the place inside
2. It is a looong walk draging your machine from the front door
3. No Drinking & No Food - nobody knew about the canteen only ppl who were in UL did
4. this lan never took off

Is it safe now?

Just like to add to 2 cents:

For: Nice big room. Comfy chairs. Lots of desk space. Internet connection.
( At least 7 of us playing on the TIG 64 man BF2 server without, as it turns out, any lag.)

Somewhere in-between:
Not a major issue but the room was a bugger to get to:
Thanks to... ermmm... Whoever it was who help me get me stuff up with the trolley.

No food or drink in the room:
This I understand but it was funny watching people walk out the door into the corridor, take a swig and walk back in.

Against:
No dedicated server:
Sorry, but you really do need a one of these at a LAN. ( I would of brought mine if Id known but I brought DeWinter instead. )
Sure, someone could host but who wants to try playing on a PC hosting 20 odd players?
Thats why us "leftys" hit the TIG server. We got the 10 people needed to start a game AND it was a ranked server.

Leeching:
Yes, I did have shares open. I just didnt think anyone (/me also looks at Paul OConnor) would actually download everything WHILE I was playing games.
As soon as I disabled my shares, the lag I was experiencing to the TIG server went. And a lot of people missed out on some great stuff.
LAN etiquette was severely lacking on this front.

Organisation:
Someone helped me find the room / bring my stuff up. (Did I say thanks?) I thought he was in charge.
Someone else took my money. Ahh, hes in charge.
A third person started giving announcements.... Ermmm. Was he in charge? Now if only I knew their names...
I recognised Lord Kahn from the Fort Fragg LANs and a couple of other people.
Never was introduced to anyone, not even the people I was helping to get up and running.

Games:
Well - There was BF2 v1.12 online but not everyone could join.
( Tried to get someone patched and onto the TIG BF2 server without any luck - Then he tells me he was using a keygend serial number )
So Dazza hosted a BF2 local server.
Then about 6 or 7 of us played CS:Source ( Yank, Horse, JoeFace, shoot_the_moon, polar_ice, me )
Nobody told us about any other game servers running/ask us if we wanted to join in/begged us to join in to make up the numbers.
Remember, not everyone likes your favourite game. I hate RTS type games but play them if asked nicely

This LAN has a lot of promise. Hopefully the next one will be as good, if not better then the Fort Fragg LANs.
( And closer to the car park - What if it was raining? )

BlueDrax

PS We did find the canteen. Trouble is, we was looking for the exit.

YES! Fort Fragg Rules!!! hehe

it was the the place that was off WAY off, there was no admins in change imho

Heh, Course you all left at 6-7pm on saturday. even though they attempted they could really try harder

anyway, Fort Fragg Rules them all(allthough not the fort fragg here on room101.org)

My Covert poeple are waiting and they will come back and Run Lans again!

B2005(the current) EG010 is the one it was supposed to be but was double booked which meant we had to walk

EG010 (Ground floor)
Nice and big, close to a car park
but tables are needed (right tables are needed )
think they are real cheap chairs

no, Cat5/Cat6 like b2 But there are along the wall and they are rooms adjectent which can be used if you need a "lay down for a while"

Unfortunally I missed out on some of the earlier gaming as I onl arrived at 6pm, but the CS: Source with Bluedraax, Joeface , Yank, Horse, shoot_the_moon, BigMcJ, and myself. Plus later on with Bulletmagent, Zilog Jones, bonton, KerranJast, Daxis Marr, Wizo, herr_cron, kev_ofla and myself again was good fun.

Unfortuanlly the CS: Source comp was held very later, so it was only a 4v4 consisting of. The prizes went to the best player on each team.
Team -=RTE=- (Rigged to Explode)
1. Polar Ice -=RTE=-
2. Shoot_The_Moon -=RTE=-
3. [UWb] DM
4. [UWb] Wizo

Team [UWb] (Ultimate War Bastards)
1. [UWG] KerranJast
2. [UWb] herr_cron
3. BulletMagnet -=[GSOC]=-
4. [UWb] Zilog Jones

I didnt get a chance to meet Yank, Bluedrax, Voodoo, or Morph who proved to be great fun to play against in UT2004 and CS: Source (that big pillar got in the way.)

Hey lads,

Right can only speak for the Sunday as I had other commitments on the Saturday.

First off, there was a dedicated server. I left my shuttle there and all official tournaments were meant to be played off that. As far as I know it was an official BF2 tourney server on Saturday at the least...

As I said, I only showed from Sunday and tried to get Dawn of War and BF2 comps going. I was told that people wer asked for a Q4 tourney and there was no interest. COD, UT2004 and CS:S was run off to the best of my knowledge.

My general impression was a lack of interest in playing something that wasnt online...
Then people went back online and didnt seem to have any interest in playing. We ended up pubbing for a while with BF2 instead of runnign a competition in the end because not enough people were available to run off a 5 v 5 even.

Maybe people were just happy to do theyre own thing but if ye wanted more tournaments tournament so badly why didnt you speak up then, when we could have run one off.

With regard the time of games, it was stated tournaments were starting at 6pm. We were giving until then to leech and do whatever you wanted.

With regard to the food, sorry but our hands were tied and we informed ye of this beforehand. Its something we hope we can work on for the next one

Anyway Im not making excuses, as we said it was our first LAN and we have plenty to learn. Next time we will have a dedicated server 24/7 and roll out a better webpage with game polls on the hour, followed by switching the server to that game until the next poll. Also well try to have some sort of PA system so the communication with admins is better. As for location, yes its a long way into UL, but thats the price you pay for comfortable lab. EG0-10 is still an option for future lans if theres interest. Anything else you want, ask. Really we cant improve if we dont know whats wrong.

ive donated to room101.org!

Well guys, thanks for a good weekend. I had a good time. The lab was a good venue except for the long walk and the no eating and drinking thing. I especially loved the fast net connection. I hope you are taking the comments on board though. Obvoiusly a few mistakes were made which if you can learn from them can only serve to make the next lan better. For a first lan it was pretty good. maybe a bit more organisation for the games and competitions next time. A dedicated server would be a help. I would have liked to see the competitions going ahead as planned. I mainly wanted to play in the DOW comp but it never happened. I still got a prize though. Thanks for the xbox game Frodo. : )
I had one great game of BF2 on sunday though. That was nice. I will definitely be buying a copy of that game soon. Great fun. Anyway I hope there will be more gaming at the next lan. I will try to be there. Well done guys.

Molc, just to update you. There was no COD comp. You didnt try to get DoW going. The only 2 people that tried to get DoW going were JakTheHat and myself and we couldnt because of different versions. I never heard an announcement for any Q4 tourney.

The only comps that were run were UT2004 and CS:S (both which started an hour late). The CS:S comp was run so late in the evening that we only had 8 people playing. The only proper comp that was run was the UT2004 comp which Frodo set up and that ran well. For those that were left at 11pm or so the CS:S comp was finally run and those of us that played had a good 1 hour over 4 maps of fun.

I personally hink taht all the online BF2 brought the thing down conisdering that not everyone could play online. I know JakTheHat was stuck there for a good 3 hours by himself playing DoW while the rest of us were playing BF2 online.

Aye agree about the online gaming as well - kinda takes the point out of having a LAN.

As for the competitions, was just given different information.

Just after a chat with the other admins and weve taken your comments on board. One of them is going to post the thoughts we had and his impressions from the saturday part of the LAN. Hes in a better position to talk about what happened for the earlier part of the LAN.
