I third the comments on online gaming. I have to wonder whats the point of playing online games at a LAN.

I had some fun at the weekend, even if a lot of things didnt run.

BTW there was a copy of DoW left behind which I took, thinking it belonged to one of the lads. He later told me that he has his copy. So whose is it? If no-one replies here, Ill just hand it over to GSoc/Skynet commitee people.

Hi guys. I was the net admin for the lan (aka long-haired pedant sitting beside the gateway trying to make sure that the network was running smoothly). Ive been reading the comments people have made, and theyre mostly fair enough.

Basically, it was our first lan, and we made a lot of mistakes.

Im going to try and reply to most complaints below, not with excuses, but with improvements we hope will address the issues for the next time we run one. Please, reply with comments/suggestions/insults if necessary. Believe me when i say that everything ye say is helping us to improve the future situation. Anyway, i have a page of notes ive taken of things i think should change, so here goes.

Physical location:
Access. We can provide trollies to help people car<-->lab. We can also try and get a nearer entrance opened.

Directions. Someone said it was hard to find the lab. I know we overlooked putting signs up to say what floor people should be going to at least. If anyone got lost somewhere else, can they reply below so we dont overlook that too next time?

Eating/drinking. Well, unfortunately the no eating/drinking rule is one of the conditions for the lab, so i dont think we can get that changed. However, we can improve things somewhat by providing some chairs, tables, bins, and maybe even free drinking water in the wide corridor outside the lab. I know im not the only one who ate there, so we can at least make it more comfortable ,-) Also, well put up signs to the toilest, canteen etc.

Communication/organisation:
Admins. The admins will have distinctive tee-shirts, caps, or possibly just facial disfigurement.

PA. Yeah, we need one.

Projector. We also need to make much better use of the screen at the front to keep people informed of stuff.

Co-ordination. I think what molc said above about having a poll (on a website. btw, how many people knew there was a local website for the lan with info on it? no-one? yup, we screwed that up too) every hour (or 2 hours? opinions?) on what game people want to play and announcing it on the changeover and hosting a dedicated server for it is a good idea.

Leeching. I think setting some time aside for leeching is a good thing, and making it clear that its not allowed without express permission of the filesharer outside of that. I suggest picking times that most people are likely to be eating or just dead. In fact, it could even be one of the options on the what game do you want to play now? poll.

Tech stuff:
Dedicated servers. Have some next time ,-) (and by that i mean have them there from the start, if we cant provide enough ourselves try asking nicely of people well in advance of the lan, etc).

Misc stuff:
Cost. Were thinking of charging E5 a head. This is cutting things very tight on our end, but its worth more to us to try and encourage those people who were dissatisifed with last time to come back and give us another chance to do it better.

Sponsorship. More of it. -)

Prizes. I dont know how people felt about the prizes, so please feel free to comment. Theyll certainly be much more clearly announced in advance next time.

Manpower. We undermanned ourselves. Next time were planning to have 2 gaming admins and 1 network admin present at all times to help things run more smoothly.

So, as i said above, comments please. Also, thank you for all who did come. Even if the event could have been better, it was great to see the numbers turn out.

Steve

*Update*
Just to be nice and clear: we want to run some more. I may have alluded to this above, but ive been told i should mention it specifically. That person may be tired. -)

I had to leave early on saturday(6.30pm) ..promised the missus id take her for dinner
/wishs i was a student again :-(

As regards the server.. Bluedrax has a server that was put together from spare parts donated by all our lan cronies and he has it patched up to the latest games for every lan.../me takes hat off to drax

So if asked he would gladly bring it to the next lan...also i think if there was a timetable relased in advance of the next lan..

regarding the net access i have mixed views on this.... i think that if the numbers are on the small side the net acess is a good idea to get a decent game going ...but def... if there is good numbers which there should be...net access should be restricted

I, and the rest of GSoc should have put more effort into organising this thing, and we should have done more work together with CompSoc too.

The internet connection was questionable - I wasnt really too happy with people playing BF2 online forever, but it was invaluable for getting stoopid Steam to actually work.

Im up for charging less for next time anyway - GSoc certainly arent in it for the money ^_^

Also regarding location of the LAN - that lab is probably the best place lab-wise - theres loads of spare network ports and easily accessible switches, and other labs in that department (and pretty much everywhere else) have 2 PCs to a desk (that one only has one), so thered be more junk in the way.

Other than that we could use EG-010 as first planned, with no similarly usable network (i.e. wed need a hiedous barrage of wires all over the place) and a questionable supply of power. Also itd be fookin freezing in there this time of year, there are no nearby vending machines like with the canteen just downstairs from the B2 block, and the chairs will remind you of your Leaving Cert days...

:-) Oh Two attacks on me for leeching! :-) Firstly If you refer to the details of the lan above it says nothing about leeching allowed or not so first i heard of it nor did i hear it being anounced, secondly if people didnt want leeching why had they shares up while playing games! Its in the nature of all lans that file shareing is part of it, you want to share you share if you dont you disable all your shares, how am i supposed to know if your playing or not, if i did tick u off while playing games apologies i didnt know you were playing at the time, so Dazza not a dig or anything if you dont like poeple taking all that great stuff duing games disable shares,

The only way to stop leeching is to disable them not ban them, nor moan about it and say nothing till after the lan on a forum! the room was small enough to shout !VOODOO stop leeching" :-)

afaik there was nothing for or against leeching, generally most ppl use FTPs that way the can control the amount of leeching say 1mbit/s then they can still play away to their hearts content and the leecher can leech their box all he wants

this is a very way imho, at our lan we had two switchs one for games and 1 for leeching when you werent playing games you were leeching, but it did mean you had to switch your self around so thats why the FTPs became a lot hander.

although leeching my box was fine with 3.2ghz for playing and a 3.2ghz for leeching

well, everyone seems to have the same opinion. im not gonna bother listing them since theyve already been listed quite a lot. i have a few things to say. some guy came off as a right dickhead in the last two pages, i cant remember his name. sure, it was a bit of a mess but who are you to say it was terrible (i cant remember exact words). at the end of the day, 20euro was expensive for what was on offer but did you ever think;
some people did not want to play your games?
did you ever think some pcs might not be up to the task of better games?

just because you might have a colossus of a pc (i couldnt care less really) doesnt give you the right to bitch because others cant play it and so what if they cant afford/be arsed buying the authentic game. you ever think some people might be poor, idiot??

some people at the lan were watching films, otheres were watching/downloading porn and others were sleeping or doing something else, not everyone was ready to join all the games you wanted to play. its not all about you, if someone wants to play bf1942, let them. its your own tough shit.

i really hope another lan is held, things can only get better. when i heard there wasnt even a server, i was very put-off. a pa system (like midlans) would have been nice too. sure a lot of things went wrong. you have to start somehwere.
lastly, if you think youre deserving to be able to criticise others attempts at a lan, organise one yourself, (with all the restrictions that skylan had, do you really have any idea how hard it was for the to book that room in the first place?). i know you might have already organised bazillions of lans but to be honest i couldnt give two shits what you think anyway.

In response to
some people did not want to play your games?

The point of a lan is to have large numbers of ppl/gamers playin the same game , Dont care if ppl were playin 1942, they never asked anyone to join , would have gladly joined
Didnt care what games were been played , and still dont the point was no one took charge and asked everyone , "hey what games do ye want to play " and does everyone have a copy of this "

and In response to
" did you ever think some pcs might not be up to the task of better games?
just because you might have a colossus of a pc (i couldnt care less really) doesnt give you the right to bitch because others cant play it and so what if they cant afford/be arsed buying the authentic game. you ever think some people might be poor, idiot??"

why does the system spec thing keep been brought up, the games were listed when the lan was announced, they were asked for other sugestions , If they couldnt play the games that were listed they had nearly 3 or 4 weeks to offer alternates , not many if any at all did.

Oh great .....people go to lans to watch films FFS

Bonton ..if your going to charge people E20 to watch porn or films i suggest you dont try and dress it up as a lan...

If you advertise games to be played, tournamnets, and other prizes..... and none of this happens ...you asking for trouble

I dont give a shit if yee students have crappy pcs or not ... been there done that not a student anymore....

As has been stated already you charged people money to come in and sit in the same room watching movies ....WTF is that all about

Is it just me or does it smell like yee were keeping the prizes for your own buddies....

And lastly i couldnt give a flying fcuk wheather anyone things Im a right dick head..as far as im concerned it was the worst lan ever....

Even calling it a lan sounds just wrong.

So stick that up your college pipe and smoke it.

Calm down. As for the leeching just turn shares off.

My 2 cents, just not organised enough. People complain about too much BF2, i didnt hear anyone else recomend anything(plus the way i look at it, BF2 is the hottest MP game at the moment), too much time on the net with BF2 again i didnt hear anyone say that, we would have gotten off it, if it was a problem.

As for games not patching etc, patch them thats why theres a list telling what games will be played. I spent last thursday evening patching up COD, dawn of war(even tho i hate it), cstrike, id already done BF2. More should have done this. As for UT, im sorry but ive never liked the game even when i played unreal on my 350mhz i hated it. Didnt want to play cstrike but i did, and there was 6 of us at most playing all together the same time(one or 2 left or came in).

Then again maybe it was down to this the 1st lan. When we started doing our lans, we spent the 1st 4-6 hours patching as well, now we arrive and are setup and playing within 20 mins. then again we got a drax.

The walk killed me, next time im taking most of the hds out of my system.

The best thing for me was net access for BF2, i legimately thought there was 20+ of us playing at one stage until i realised the other 10+ were online players. but i did enjoy it, thats what lans are about fragging someone beside and slagging them off. Hopefully weve all learned from this lan and the next will be better and involve less breaking of backs.

BTW i was the ginger git beside Dazza.

Kormat, Glad to see you row in here. Your reply demonstrates your wise and respected opinion (even if you didnt join in playing on the day) as a person who sees the BIG picture. Ultimately to make these things succesful you need to have an attitude like yours. Believe me, there is discussions going on outside this fourm of how BAD this lan was - and its the loudest complainers on here that are defending this LAN to outside doubters...reason being we want it to succeed - but it cannot succeed without players. whoever heard of a lan totally for leeching?

Bonton, I believe its me you are aiming your attacks at me(or at least my group). Your opinion is as worthy as mine - however you ruin it with your last line. I think others have dealt with your reply anyways.

At the end of the day we are only telling the truth - and of the 3 UL lans i have attended, others were more succesful for one reason or another. At the very least this thread gives food for thought for the next one. Anyone complaing about the room needs their head examined though - hmmmm nice comfy chairs, network points in place....food you can get over and distance??? lord knows many of us could do with the exercise.

Ok enough stupid talk answer me this?

Why would you advertise games to be played and then start complaining that you cant play because your pc wasnt quick enough.

I saw the list of games advertised and went to the lan on the basis that they would be played.

Did anyone ask us to play any other games apart from BF2 ? NO

So therefore how are we meant to know wot your reason for not playing is.

Does anyone really care wot in someone else pc .... I think not

When i said i dont care if someone has a crappy pc... Well i dont ! Why should I....(that wasnt meant directly @ students it was directed at everyone) Unless we develop x ray vision and can some how see inside peoples pcs ...how are we going to know....So run along call me wot ya like....but it still doesnt change wots in your system.

If i was asked or any other in or group we would have gladly played anything else...but they didnt ..so i rest my case.

Some of yee organisers have no problem talking here on this forum ..but it was a completley different story the day of the lan.

Words spoken by lan organisers @ lan : Name? Twenty Euros please!

Well am i wrong? Ask Horse, Joeface, yank, dewinter, dougal and they will confirm this.

SO LADS STOP TRYING TO DIRECT THE ATTENTION FROM A BAD LAN ....TO ME NOT GIVING A FUCK ABOUT PEOPLES PCS - thats not going to change....

@ Lordkhan you win

i only have

p43.6ghz
2gigs ddr2 ram
X850XT 256mb pcie
1.2TB
