| Hi guys. I was the net admin for the lan (aka long-haired pedant sitting beside the gateway trying to make sure that the network was running smoothly). Ive been reading the comments people have made, and theyre mostly fair enough.
Basically, it was our first lan, and we made a lot of mistakes.
Im going to try and reply to most complaints below, not with excuses, but with improvements we hope will address the issues for the next time we run one. Please, reply with comments/suggestions/insults if necessary. Believe me when i say that everything ye say is helping us to improve the future situation. Anyway, i have a page of notes ive taken of things i think should change, so here goes.
Physical location:
Access. We can provide trollies to help people car<-->lab. We can also try and get a nearer entrance opened.
Directions. Someone said it was hard to find the lab. I know we overlooked putting signs up to say what floor people should be going to at least. If anyone got lost somewhere else, can they reply below so we dont overlook that too next time?
Eating/drinking. Well, unfortunately the no eating/drinking rule is one of the conditions for the lab, so i dont think we can get that changed. However, we can improve things somewhat by providing some chairs, tables, bins, and maybe even free drinking water in the wide corridor outside the lab. I know im not the only one who ate there, so we can at least make it more comfortable ,-) Also, well put up signs to the toilest, canteen etc.
Communication/organisation:
Admins. The admins will have distinctive tee-shirts, caps, or possibly just facial disfigurement.
PA. Yeah, we need one.
Projector. We also need to make much better use of the screen at the front to keep people informed of stuff.
Co-ordination. I think what molc said above about having a poll (on a website. btw, how many people knew there was a local website for the lan with info on it? no-one? yup, we screwed that up too) every hour (or 2 hours? opinions?) on what game people want to play and announcing it on the changeover and hosting a dedicated server for it is a good idea.
Leeching. I think setting some time aside for leeching is a good thing, and making it clear that its not allowed without express permission of the filesharer outside of that. I suggest picking times that most people are likely to be eating or just dead. In fact, it could even be one of the options on the what game do you want to play now? poll.
Tech stuff:
Dedicated servers. Have some next time ,-) (and by that i mean have them there from the start, if we cant provide enough ourselves try asking nicely of people well in advance of the lan, etc).
Misc stuff:
Cost. Were thinking of charging E5 a head. This is cutting things very tight on our end, but its worth more to us to try and encourage those people who were dissatisifed with last time to come back and give us another chance to do it better.
Sponsorship. More of it. -)
Prizes. I dont know how people felt about the prizes, so please feel free to comment. Theyll certainly be much more clearly announced in advance next time.
Manpower. We undermanned ourselves. Next time were planning to have 2 gaming admins and 1 network admin present at all times to help things run more smoothly.
So, as i said above, comments please. Also, thank you for all who did come. Even if the event could have been better, it was great to see the numbers turn out.
Steve
*Update*
Just to be nice and clear: we want to run some more. I may have alluded to this above, but ive been told i should mention it specifically. That person may be tired. -)
