i'm really hoping battlefield 2 is released and delivered on time, this lan could serve a goos playtester for it

requirements:

your box and everything needed to game
transport - the venue is a bit outside the city
10/100mbit network card
a 10m+ length of cat5 network cable if you prefer, i will supply you with a cable if needed
4-way gang adapter/power strip and whatever extension cables you can lay your hands on.
headphones (no speakers!).
money for food, drink, accomodation etc.
your >>signed waiver<< - no admission without one
melee weapon of choice (eg: batleth, frying pan, hypnotoad, sleeping tmoney etc.)
drivers/games/apps discs, os + cdkeys just in case you need to reformat on the day.
anti-virus software fully updated. i recommend avg free edition from grisoft.comno lan access without some. i will make avg free edition installer and updates available on the ftp server.
bring sleeping-bags/floormats if you haven't got the stamina

Right. From what I now understand, if you copy the steam content packs from someone's steam folder who ahs it updated, and fireup steam, it may need to fiddle on the net for a sec, but it shouldn't have to saturate any net connections to download massive files. I'll look into this further - or if someone who plays HL2/CSS regularly could investiage and possibly test it I'd be much obliged

As for the actual net conn - I *could* rig a smoothwall box in 5 minutes, but the wifi-part may be an issue, I'll look into it. I have a box that'll take Wifi cards, but I only have a 11Mbps card (and 11g card manufacturers are tight-lipped when it comes to furnishing linux driver developers with the tech specs needed to write drivers for the cards - unbelievable but true). This is all dependent on JP/Gerry giving the go-ahead on using the net conn. As DooDee said above, anyone found doing any large downloads or using the internet in an inappropriate manner will be found frighteningly quickly and dealt with severely. If the Anno does deem to grace us with a netconnection, it shall be for Steam Authing and server maintenance mainly with perhaps a little light browsing and IRC on the side. This is all dependent on the net connection being available. As for consoles - please don't bring any. Perhaps some Xbox controllers or gamecube, but nothing else. It's not a case of us not wanting ye to bring your kit, it's more a problem of limited space (at this particular upcoming event).

yah they just need to login onto the someone's steam account to validate the game files. from then on they could just play in offline mode for the rest of the lan

I will play you in Rome Total War Crusader. Infact I'll play just about any game but CS 1.6.....bores me to tears! There are versions of CSS that will work without steam isn't there why not use them.

okay if I copy my steam folder to your pc and I delete the registry.blob file you can play it after about a min on the net. I do it all the time I use my ipod as i only have a 56k line so i go to a net caf

i got steam working on all my home pcs.first thing you do is copy steam to the same location as you had it on your first pc eg if you installed it to c:\hl2 make sure its the same location on the other pc then get a internet conection dial up works fine load up steam wait a min and it will update a few reg intrys and once its finish updating in a few minutes load up a game of css make sure the game is working and then exit steam properly. disconect internet conection and if everything worked right try offline mode. one bit of advice though dont do this till the day before the lan incase theres an update or even better if you can do it at the lan. only disadvantage of doin this is using someone elces account

Its all good copying over someones css file.....dont ask me how many pple have the same account details out my way

...there's only one problem who is gona be giney pig and let others use their account details??? dont forget that other people could use that persons account after the lan....etc, not good if that persons account is caught being online by more than 1 user at one time! how does sum1 explain that to the 'nice' pple at Steam/Valve when the account has been cancelled

I dont wana be nagging...i wana play css at the lan but the problem is getting pple to allow others to use their accounts

I honestly don't think you need to use a particular person's account. You log into steam, it connects, auth's, checks for available update files/content files and downloads them from a content server/mirror. These files are basically .zip packages. I highly doubt there's anything in them that makes them unique or tied to a specific account. Otherwise how would 2 people using the same machine - but with seperate steam accounts - be able to play off the sam set of files? If the content packs are somehow altered by steam upon download completion to tie them to a particular account or if the content packs must be re-downloaded for each individual steam account on a machine then Steam is an even more ill-designed piece of horse-shit than I had originally feared.

All that has to be done after copying over sum1 css files is to log online the first time and after that you can play offline....I was just saying that people automatically log online in steam once they are on the net and ....if for some reason you try to load into a game and by chance someone with the same account is in it aswell.... it'll crash/wont load....but that dont affect offline play. [[[[[[[So if people copy sum1's css folder just make sure when they are leaving the lan that they delete it again so they cant use that persons steam account]]]]]]]] Dont want any unhappy CSS owners do we hehe
